PETERSBURG - The city's "I am Petersburg" branding campaign isn't just about cool swag like T-shirts and lapel pins - it's about changing the perception on what it means to live, play and work in Petersburg.

 

City officials believe so much in the campaign's ability to change hearts and minds, that they have spent tens of thousands on the endeavor.

  

"I am Petersburg" was launched in December after information was gathered from focus groups, online surveys, in-depth interviews and town hall meetings. Recurring themes of discussions were pride and investment in the city and a belief in Petersburg's potential. The city hired Richmond-based firm Johnson Inc. to conduct the research.

When people think of hemp, marijuana often comes to mind - because the two plants are varieties of cannabis.


But hemp has a variety of uses, from making textiles and building materials to feeding livestock. The settlers at Jamestown grew hemp. So did George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. In the 1940s, Henry Ford reportedly built a car body of hemp fiber and ran it on hemp oil.
