Fort Lee's Machining Course Prepares Students for Civilian Jobs

FORT LEE - The machining classes on post - paired with welding training part of the Allied Trades at the Ordnance School - equips students the skills to become credentialed in high demand manufacturing fields once they leave the military.

On the machining side, students work eight hours a day for 23 days in an introductory course learning how to manufacture parts by using hand tools and drills.

"It's to teach them countersinking, counterboring, precision drilling, precision tamping ... and to prepare them for the more in-depth and higher tolerance (metals)," said Staff Sgt. Robert Barfield, machining chief at the Fort Lee's Ordnance School.
