Officials Seek to Diversify Tri-Cities' Economy Despite Military Cuts

Amidst the potentially major spending cuts at Fort Lee, local leaders are finding other ways to boost the Tri-Cities economy, which relies substantially on the military.

Fort Lee could face as much as $581 million in force reductions. A report from the U.S. Army revealed major cuts estimated at $338.4 million in sales and $243 million in income. The cuts could affect as many as 3,600 soldiers and Army civilians by 2020.
Surry County's Gray's Creek Boat Ramp Ready for Use

SURRY - Phase one of the Gray's Creek Marina Complex in Surry County is ready for use, but there are is the matter of boater's speed to be addressed.


Project manager Brian Camden reported to the Surry County Board of Supervisors, this month that the facility is ready for use and is a "robust" facility.

 

This phase of the project opens a reconstructed public use boat ramp. Additional phases of the project include installation of floating boat docks and piers, renovation of the restaurant building to include bed and breakfast rooms, and a marina office that will house a dock master.
