City of Petersburg Wins Award for 'Going Green'

PETERSBURG - The city government has been recognized for its efforts to be environmentally friendly with a gold level certification for the 2014 "Go Green VA Challenge." The challenge is part of the Virginia Municipal League's "Go Green Virginia" environmental initiative. The award is given to localities for policies that reduce carbon emissions by the government and the community.

The award was presented the VML's annual conference in October and was presented by Mayor Brian Moore to the Department of Public Works at the Nov. 25 City Council meeting. This is the third year that Petersburg has received a certification from the "Green Government Challenge." Last year, the city was recognized as a silver certified "Green Government." Gold level status is awarded to localities that score 150 out of 200 possible points.

A year ago, Amazon.com workers like 34-year-old Rejinaldo Rosales hiked miles of aisles each shift to "pick" each item a customer ordered and prepare it for shipping.

Now the e-commerce giant boasts that it has boosted efficiency - and given workers' legs a break - by deploying more than 15,000 wheeled robots to crisscross the floors of its biggest warehouses and deliver stacks of toys, books and other products to employees.
