South Side Depot could be renovated as major tourist attraction
Leah Small | The Progress-Index | Full Story

PETERSBURG - The South Side Depot, an historic train station that was a key factor in the city's survival during the nearly 10-month siege of Petersburg during the Civil War, is set to be reborn as a major tourist destination.

Plans are under way to renovate the historic train depot into a National Park Service visitors center. The city has been working for years with the National Park Service to establish a visitor contact station in the city, with the idealized location being South Side Depot.

Now those plans are on the verge of being finalized.
