Autumn Equinox

Are You Balanced?

We will all receive a beautifully orchestrated experience of perfect balance this Sunday, September 22 at 4:44 pm Eastern ~ Equal Day and Night.   Right now most of us are traveling at warp speed, surfing endless waves of increasingly rapid personal and global shifts and transformations. It's now mandatory, not a luxury, to take a breather and give ourselves the gift of a time out... or better yet, a time in.

Equinox brings a point of equilibrium.   We get a moment to pause in between seasons, suspended on the teeter-totter with toes dangling just above the grass. Let's invite each other to stop for a bit, while we have this moment.  Enjoy the natural touch and smells and sights and sounds of nature. Maybe eat a meal outdoors in a sukkah. Breathe out the leftovers of a season gone by, and breathe in the sweetness of the flawless brand new.

"When the mind is silent and peaceful it becomes very powerful.

It can become a receptor of bliss and wisdom

enabling life to become a spontaneous flow and expression of joy and harmony.

However this inner silence cannot arise

while there is a continual stream

of disturbing thoughts and emotions.

All this inner noise of thoughts and emotions

has to be removed before one can truly experience

the soundless sound of inner silence."

~ Swami Satyananda Saraswati

Thank you for being here!  I am wishing you the lightest and brightest illuminations in this season of unlimited possibilities.

Take a Big, Deep Breath.

Pranayama
Calming, Grounding, Stabilizing

This easy breathing practice can be done anytime, anywhere, seated or lying down.  It's a really effective way to de-stress, calm, stabilize, center, or begin a meditation.

Breathe in as slowly as you can for as long as you can.
Pause.
Breathe out as slowly as you can for as long as you can.
Pause.

Soothing Barley and Beets

  null

Now is a Perfect Time for Barley!

Delicious barley is cooling, sweet, light, and diuretic.

It's high in fiber content, regulates blood sugar after meals and encourages liver detoxification.  This recipe gets a flavor boost with beautiful roasted beets.

1 Cup Pearled Barley

3 Cups Vegetable Broth

1/2 Cup Chopped Celery

1/4 Cup Diced Onion

1/4 Cup Chopped Parsley

2 Roasted, Diced Golden Beets

Olive Oil

Sea Salt

1/2 tsp. Tumeric

1/2 tsp. Cumin

In a heavy saucepan, saute onion and celery in olive oil over medium heat until tender.  Add vegetable broth, seasonings and barley.  Bring to a boil then cover and simmer 45-60 minutes until tender.  Barley needs to stay very moist with visible liquid, so add enough broth to prevent barley from drying out.

Add beets and parsley.   Adjust liquid and seasonings, cover and let stand for 20 minutes before serving warm.

2 Pinches Sea Salt
4 Cups Water

Combine and cook for about 15 minutes.

For Vata body type: add 1/8 tsp cumin while cooking

For Pitta, add 1/8 tsp fennel

For Kapha, add 1/8 tsp ginger.

Strain water into a container.  Sip a small glass in the morning and maybe one in the early afternoon.
