New Business in Lower 9

Please join us in welcoming a new business in our community. Burnell and Keisha Colton held a grand opening for Cross The Canal Beauty & Barbershop on June 14 for its brand new location, 2036 Caffin Ave. It's the first business to open in the Caffin Ave. Plaza and the first to open in the "Back of Town" area of the Lower 9th ward.

The next phase of the building will be a sweet shop called Galvez Street Goodies and their ultimate goal is to open a much needed grocery store to serve residents in the area.

For additional information, contact Owner Burnell Colton at (504)319-5886 or Walter Turner at (504) 813-8968.

Deep draft IHNC Lock Project Permanently Suspended by Corps

Judith Dangerfield of Metro Source announced at the last HCNA meeting that the U S Army Corps of Engineers has "permanently suspended" the Deep Draft Lock Project in the industrial Canal due to the Port of New Orleans pulling out as a local sponsor in December 2012. The project is unable to go forward without a local sponsor.

Should the Corps decide a new lock is necessary, it will be a shallow draft lock involving no further deepening. It will need new
congressional authorization and environmental studies. Meanwhile the Corps will maintain the existing lock.

Ms. Dangerfield said Metro Source has a contract to scan the many years of deep-draft lock project documents into a single database that will serve as an archive. Contact Metro Source at (504) 529-1912 for further information.
Sincerely,

Warrenetta C. Banks
