Emily's Transformation
A youth attends After-School Program and earns "Most Improvement in Reading" honors
Emily is a 7 year old second grader. Although she lives in a loving home, her mother struggles to find time to help her with homework. Emily finds it difficult to concentrate at home with her siblings around. As a result, she had fallen behind in reading, often times finding distractions to keep herself from the reading portion of her homework.
Fortunately, things changed once she became a regular participant at the Project Access After-School Program. Emily has found a quiet, safe space with a supportive environment. She frequently interacted with staff and they motivated her to practice her reading at least 20 minutes a day. Emily developed a trust with the staff, and she felt more comfortable asking questions when she didn't understand something and developed more confidence in herself.
We are happy to report that Emily is now reading at grade level, no longer feels embarrassed to read in front of a group and also likes to help other kids in the program with their home. Recently, Emily proudly shared with Project Access the principal's award for most improvement in reading.
Way to go Emily and thank you to our supporters for helping us transform Emily!
