This Lent: Remember the Sabbath and
Keep It Holy | | |
By Father Sean Cox
Lent is a season of self-examination and prayer. It's a time for repentance and renewal and an opportunity to focus on holy habits that draw us closer to God.
This year's focus is the holy habit of Sabbath keeping, which is quickly becoming an obsolete, counter-cultural practice in the information age. Our culture is driven by chronological time that's measured in nanoseconds. We worship a God whose primary desire is to spend eternity with us. How do we reconcile this dichotomy?
Jesus observed the Sabbath as a matter of principle and self-preservation. Nobody, including the Son of God, can give of themselves as much as he did without regular time for prayer, rest, and re-creation.
Keeping Sabbath:
- Demonstrates our complete faith in God to provide in six days what we would attempt to do in seven days.
- Separates us from a secular culture that values productivity over the inherent worth and dignity of every human being.
- Reminds us that time is a gift from God. We don't own time; we are stewards of the time we are given by God.
- Prepares us for what's next. How can we make good decisions about work, family, friends, finances and other important aspects of life unless we're well rested? How can we prepare to spend eternity with God unless we dedicate time for it now?
Keep a holy season of Lent through a time-tested practice. Keep the Sabbath holy, and you will connect with the Holy One.
Enriches our community life. Spending Sabbath time with family or friends provides opportunity to study scripture in depth, connect with loved ones on a deep level, and enhances our prayer life. |

Faith Church "Kingdom Rock" Vacation Bible School
June 17-21, 9-12 noon
Come join us!
The fun, friendships and faith-building of VBS is only possible with a very large volunteer base. Fortunately, the curriculum is super organized, and the volunteer assignments are simple. For the 100 children campers, there are 50-60 volunteers making it happen! Please consider volunteering! "Crew leaders," are the most needed volunteer position, because there is a crew leader for every 5 children; their job is to escort children from one activity to the next and participate with them while they are at the stations. Also needed are leaders and assistants for snacks, games, decorating, reading, projects, photography, drama and even the daily camper check in/out. There is something for everyone!
Online signups for volunteers and participants will begin mid-March. Watch for further emails, or notices in the Sunday bulletin. Questions? Contact: Adriana Findlay, Children's Ministry Director adriana@faithec.org 530-676-5348 |

Volunteer Opportunities with United Outreach
Volunteer Help Needed
United Outreach of El Dorado County helps individuals and families find a pathway out of homelessness. Faith Church has supported this local non-profit organization in numerous ways over the years since it's inception. The needs are ongoing. The following list highlights volunteer and donation opportunities:
1) Food Bank Deliveries: Drivers are needed on Thursdays to pick up groceries at the Food Bank in Placerville and deliver to the transition house in Placerville and the medical respite house in Pollock Pines. Two hour commitment on a rotating basis.
2) Donations and Haulers: Ongoing donations of dressers, beds, linens and kitchen items are accepted. A person with a large vehicle is needed to pick up donations and bring them to the Placerville office near Highway 50 and Missouri Flat Rd.
3) Cleaning: There are ongoing cleaning needs in the office: sweeping, dusting, kitchen and bathrooms. Once a month.
4) Firewood: The houses and office are heated by wood; firewood donations are very helpful. Also needed are volunteers to pick-up firewood donations and/or cut and split wood.
5) Financial Planning Coach: Residents of the transition house need to learn budgeting, goal setting and how to improve credit ratings. This could be accomplished one on one or in a group of up to six persons.
6) Yard and Facility Maintenance: Upkeep work is ongoing.
7) Shelter Monitor: Volunteers are needed to make sporadic visits to the transition house in Placerville to check that residents are keeping curfew.
Contact information can be found by visiting the United Outreach Website volunteer page at www.uoedc.org
We are keeping Patrick Hill in our prayers as he serves in Bwindi, Uganda. Pat arrived safely and is beginning the task of recording the history of the Batwa people. |

Move Out of Your Hurts, Hang ups and Habits
by Heather Shaw
Celebrate Recovery is about moving out of our hurts, hang ups and habits. Many of us are held back by bitterness, unforgiveness, past failures and unnecessary baggage that keeps us stuck. Working this Christ-centered recovery program will, with God's power, allow us to find the courage and strength to forgive. As we travel the road to recovery we become free from our addictive, compulsive, and dysfunctional behaviors by working the steps and applying biblical principles. This freedom creates peace, serenity, joy and a stronger personal relationship with God and others.
Faith Church will be utilizing a Step/Beatitude Study Workshop format for Celebrate Recovery. It will be an action-packed course full of exciting insight into working through our hurts, hang ups and habits. We will have the opportunity to benefit from the best of Celebrate Recovery in this 8 week course. As we progress through the principles and steps we discover our personal, loving, and forgiving Higher Power - Jesus Christ.
Celebrate Recovery provides a safe place to share experiences, victories and hopes with others who are going through Christ-centered recovery. Come join us and continue the transformative journey of lent into the rest of 2013.
Classes begin Wednesday, April 3, 2013. 6:30-8:00 pm. 8 week workshop.
For more information contact Heather Shaw who is listed in the online directory.

Feeding the Body, Feeding the Soul | | |
Sharing God's Love, One Meal at a Time
By Sarah Goodness
As the "Executive Chef" of my household, I know how stressful meal planning and preparation can be. It's hard enough to get breakfast, lunch and dinner on the table when life is relatively normal, but when the unexpected happens, feeding my family can be the hardest task of the day. This is where I am happy to share a special, behind-the-scenes ministry at Faith Church.
Part of the Pastoral Care of Faith Church includes our Meal Ministry Team, which I am proud to coordinate. The purpose of this ministry is to relieve the stress of making dinner when life's stresses become overwhelming. We currently have a team of over forty people in our Faith Family who volunteer to make meals for those in need in our congregation. If you ever find yourself experiencing an illness, surgery, injury, accident, birth of a child, or simply find yourself in need, I encourage you to contact me, Jeanette Bessent, head of Pastoral Care, or the church office so we can arrange meal preparation and delivery for you. (All contact information is available in the Church Directory online.)
In Don Piper's 90 Minutes in Heaven, after a traumatic accident, Rev. Piper struggles to allow others to help him during his recovery, though his severe injuries require him to accept assistance. He learns that by denying the help of others, he is robbing those individuals seeking to help him the opportunity to share God's love. This is one of the two-fold goals of the Meal Ministry Team: Meal Ministry gives those who volunteer to make meals the opportunity to share God's love through a warm meal. The other side of that same coin is this ministry gives the recipients of the lovingly prepared meals the chance to feel the love of God that is shared in our community.
I encourage you to try a First Serve with our Meal Ministry Team. To participate in the Meal Ministry Team all you need to do is provide your email address. When we receive a request for meals, we use a website called TakeThemAMeal.com, a wonderful, easy to use resource that creates a meal schedule. When someone needs meals, the Meal Ministry Team receives an email from me and TakeThemAMeal.com. Simply select the date you would like to provide a meal and what meal you think you will bring (that way the person in need doesn't end up with seven tuna noodle casseroles). The contact information for the recipient is provided so you can coordinate delivery of your meal.
You do not have to be a master chef to participate. Frozen meals, take and bake pizzas, grocery store rotisserie chickens, and even take out can be what you select to bring to a person in need of a meal. Also, you are not required to participate every time we receive a meal request. Usually there are 7 to 8 meals requested; if it does not fit in your schedule this time, simply wait for the next request and participate when you are able.
Please join us in sharing the abundance of God's love, one meal at a time. "Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God." 1 John 4:7 |
