BID Night Vehicle Patrol Help Control Fire Damage

On July 10, 2014 at 2:00 AM, BID Night Vehicle Patrol (NVP) Safety Officers Juan Madera and Spencer Freer smelled smoke during their evening patrol of the District. They searched the area and determined that there was an interior fire located at 1053 S Maple Ave. BID officers notified the LA Fire Department (LAFD). They responded and quickly extinguished the fire.

Neighborhood Prosecutors Address District Issues

We had an opportunity to talk with Neighborhood Prosecutors Kurt Knecht, Central Division, and Erika Sandoval, Newton Division, at the BID Operations Committee meeting on July 15, 2014. (The LA Fashion District is located in both LAPD divisions.) Committee members and property owners reported on problems with graffiti tagging, illegal sidewalk vending and nuisance activity generated by a business that sells alcohol in single servings. The Neighborhood Prosecutors are focusing their work on problem vendors and target locations.

Central Division Crime Report for Fashion District

The Fashion District had no burglaries from July 6-12, 2014. There was one robbery at 9th Street & Maple Avenue. The suspect was arrested, booked and released. The same suspect was arrested again for another burglary at 9th and Santee Streets.  Since then there have been no further burglaries to date.

Need for Homeless Outreach Recognized

As part of the Business Leaders Task Force to End Chronic Homelessness we have been working on a plan to provide better outreach to the mentally ill homeless population on Skid Row. These efforts have been recognized in the recently announced County/City initiative. Click Here to read the LA Times article.

Moving Towards Sustainability and Energy Efficiency

We attended Central City Association's (CCA) Transportation, Infrastructure & Energy Committee meeting regarding Los Angeles' efforts to create 20,000 green jobs, while reducing energy consumption by 15%. Matt Petersen, from the Office of Mayor Eric Garcetti, presented the City's Sustainability Plan that is scheduled to be reviewed by the Mayor in August, and implemented in 2015. Click Here to read more about the city's ambitious Sustainability Agenda in an April 2014 article from The Planning Report.
