Huckleberry's Natural Market stands in support of Product Labeling.
National and statewide concerns regarding GMO labeling continue to grow as consumers seek answers to questions about the wholesomeness of foods they buy. "Huckleberry's Natural Market supports the consumer's right to know. What you put in, and on your body is important information. Our consumers deserve to know the facts about the makeup of products they are using", stated Don Whittaker, Director of Huckleberry's Marketing and Operations. "We strive to provide the very best in local, natural, and organic products for our customers. We support consistent and clear product labeling, including GMO labeling" he added.
While the current state initiative has a timeline requiring GMO labeling within two years, Huckleberry's believes the process will take additional time. "We have a goal of removing all products with GMO from our shelves within the next five years," says Whittaker. "The five year window is key to allowing smaller vendors and manufacturers time to make the necessary changes and spread the associated costs over a longer period so they can remain in business. In the meantime, we will continue to source products that do not use GMOs, and will work with our suppliers as they transition to ingredients that are GMO free", added Whittaker.
Huckleberry's currently supports and labels certified organic products, which are by their very nature GMO free. The U.S. National Organic Standards prohibit the intentional use of GMO seed in the production of organic crops. Customers buying certified organic products at Huckleberry's can be assured they are not consuming GMO's. Huckleberry's also supports many other vendor partners who source products without GMO ingredients. GMO labeling will help consumers clearly identify these products.
