Huckleberry's Voted Best Organic/Natural Foods

The Pacific Northwest Inlander's 20th Annual Reader's Poll has been tallied up, and for the 17th year in a row Huckleberry's Natural Market has been voted Best Organic/Natural Foods.

From the Inlander:
Huckleberry's was there before it was vogue, pushing organics on Spokanites, and Inlander readers have responded in kind, voting them into the Best Of Hall of Fame. North Spokane's Robert Fairfax says: "They have an overall great variety. Cheese, produce, dairy and even wine! I love their deli selections and the fact they are locally owned."

Everything you buy affects the environment,
but some choices are better than others.

"Green purchasing" means buying smart. Shop with the environment in mind, that is, buy products that help conserve natural resources, save energy, and prevent waste. By educating yourself about the products you buy, you can make a difference in protecting the environment.

Green purchasing involves learning about all the ways that a product can affect the environment during the course of its "life cycle" - from the materials used to manufacture it, to how you use it, to what you do with it when you're finished with it - so that you can make smart choices.

Huckleberry's is committed to social and environmental responsibility. We actively seek partnerships with local, regional and national producers who are dedicated to stewardship of the land.

Huckleberry's Natural Market stands in support of Product Labeling.

National and statewide concerns regarding GMO labeling continue to grow as consumers seek answers to questions about the wholesomeness of foods they buy. "Huckleberry's Natural Market supports the consumer's right to know. What you put in, and on your body is important information. Our consumers deserve to know the facts about the makeup of products they are using", stated Don Whittaker, Director of Huckleberry's Marketing and Operations. "We strive to provide the very best in local, natural, and organic products for our customers. We support consistent and clear product labeling, including GMO labeling" he added.

While the current state initiative has a timeline requiring GMO labeling within two years, Huckleberry's believes the process will take additional time. "We have a goal of removing all products with GMO from our shelves within the next five years," says Whittaker. "The five year window is key to allowing smaller vendors and manufacturers time to make the necessary changes and spread the associated costs over a longer period so they can remain in business. In the meantime, we will continue to source products that do not use GMOs, and will work with our suppliers as they transition to ingredients that are GMO free", added Whittaker.

Huckleberry's currently supports and labels certified organic products, which are by their very nature GMO free. The U.S. National Organic Standards prohibit the intentional use of GMO seed in the production of organic crops. Customers buying certified organic products at Huckleberry's can be assured they are not consuming GMO's. Huckleberry's also supports many other vendor partners who source products without GMO ingredients. GMO labeling will help consumers clearly identify these products.
