Pre-K Tax Credit Available Through
Early Childhood Development Act

A new tax credit is available for businesses and individuals through donations to collaboratives created by The Early Learning Collaborative Act of 2013.  The Act is designed to expand Pre-K education for low income children throughout Mississippi. Individuals or businesses that make a donation are eligible for a state tax credit up to $1 million.

The Mississippi Department of Education has selected 11 community collaboratives to offer Pre-K, but these organizations are required to provide one-to-one matching funds. Businesses can donate to a specific collaborative or to a specific program in the service delivery area of a collaborative.  Each collaborative's "wish list" may vary depending upon community needs. Any unused portion of the tax credit can be carried over for 3 years. The overall level of contributions is capped at the amount appropriated by the Legislature. Currently, $3 million is appropriated for Pre-K and therefore, contributions cannot exceed that level.

Business support for Pre-K expansion is critical to ensure that low income children throughout Mississippi have access to early learning.  Studies show quality Pre-K improves a child's school readiness and ultimate school performance.

International Ballet Competition
Brings History, Heritage to Mississippi

Dear  ,

The first International Ballet Competition was held in Varna, Bulgaria in 1964 and evolved into a rotating competition between the cities of Varna, Moscow and Tokyo.  It eventually garnered so much attention that in 1975, the Jackson Ballet Guild invited a renowned ballet teacher and educator to develop a professional ballet company and school for the state of Mississippi.  We know her as Thalia Mara, the namesake of Thalia Mara Hall in downtown Jackson.

Her development plan introduced city leaders to ballet competitions, convincing them to secure the USA IBC for the city of Jackson.  Thanks to her determination, and with the help of local, national and international endorsements and the commitment of Jacksonians, the first USA International Ballet Competition was held in June 1979, featuring 70 dancers from 15 countries. The competition was so successful that Jackson was added to the prestigious list of hosts, joining Varna, Moscow and Tokyo as hosts of International Theater Institute competitions.  In 1982, Congress passed a resolution designating Jackson as the official home of the IBC.  It has been held in Jackson every four years since 1982.

This year, the 10th USA International Ballet Competition will descend on Jackson from June 14-29, providing a major economic boost to the state.  An independent economic study concluded that the ninth USA IBC, held in 2010, generated $10.2 million for Mississippi, a 35% increase from 2006 and 61% increase from 2002.  Thanks to the leadership of former MEC Chair Haley Fisackerly, who is Chair of the Board of Directors of the USA International Ballet Competition, this year is poised to continue the upward growth.
