Aid Needed After Storms Ravage
Mississippi Communities

Dear  ,

Earlier this week our state keenly felt the wrath of Mother Nature as tornadoes and foul weather damaged and destroyed communities, businesses and homes in numerous areas of Mississippi. According to reports from the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency (MEMA), thirteen Mississippians lost their lives, with damage being reported in 23 counties. At least 945 homes were destroyed or sustained major damage, with a total of more than 1,750 homes affected. In addition, preliminary assessments show 65 businesses were destroyed or sustained major damage.

Seven counties were declared federal disaster areas - Itawamba, Lee, Lowndes, Madison, Rankin, Wayne and Winston. This tragedy can be felt across our state, and there has never been a better time to come together to support your neighbor and help friends get back on their feet. In the current situation, financial aid is the best and fastest way to assist victims with disaster relief.

In Winston County, a Winston County Relief Fund has been established for victims of the tornadoes. If you would like to give, a tax-exempt disaster relief fund has been set up.  Checks can be sent to - Renasant Bank, 301 N. Church Ave., Louisville, MS 39339.  Contributions to the Winston County Disaster Relief Fund will be tax deductible.  For those wishing to donate in-kind, please contact Mayor Will Hill's office at (662) 773-9201.

MEC member the CREATE Foundation is currently accepting donations to assist with tornado relief.  Donations can be made online by Clicking Here, by phone (662) 844-8989 or mail - P.O. Box 1053, Tupelo, MS 38802.  The CREATE Foundation will match donations up to a total of $25,000.

Conference Set for May 14

The "Tort Reform: After Ten Years" Conference will begin at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, May 14 at the Jackson Convention Center.

In 2004 former Governor Barbour signed into law a comprehensive law regarding tort reform in Mississippi. The "Tort Reform: After Ten Years" Conference will celebrate the success of the tort reform law, review its positive results and discuss risks that could reduce or reverse those benefits.

At the conference former Governor Haley Barbour will review the successful grassroots effort to pass the bill, then there will be a panel of state, professional and industry leaders who will spell out the beneficial effects of the 2004 reforms.

A second panel will discuss the future of tort reform in Mississippi; both in preserving the progress already made plus improving on those results. A reception will follow the seminar at 5 p.m., also at the Jackson Convention Center.

The public, as well as our own leaders and members, must not become complacent about lawsuit abuse. The threats against tort reform are real. We must remain active and vigilant.
