Yokohama Tire Corporation Breaks Ground in West Point
From Left: Hikomitsu Noji, President, Yokohama Tire Corporation; Governor Phil Bryant; Tadaharu Yamamoto, President, Yokohama Tire Manufacturing Mississippi and Brent Christensen, Director, Mississippi Development Authority at the groundbreaking of the Yokohama Tire Manufacturing Facility in West Point.

Gov. Phil Bryant, executives from Yokohama Tire Corporation and state and local officials gathered in West Point to break ground on Yokohama's first ground-up manufacturing facility in the United States. The company will manufacture commercial truck tires at the plant and had announced in April of this year that it would locate operations in West Point.

The first phase of the project represents a $300 million investment by Yokohama and will create 500 new jobs. Potential future expansions are projected to increase the company's investment to more than $1 billion and to raise employment from 500 to 2,000 jobs.

In April, the Mississippi Legislature approved a total of $130 million in incentives to assist with the project, $70 million of which was allotted for the initial phase of the project. Part of the funding was used toward the purchase of the 500-acre site for the facility, and the remainder is being used for site preparation, infrastructure needs and workforce training.

Alliance Purchases Land for Industrial Park in Corinth

Corinth and Alcorn County officials hope to provide an economic game changer with their recent purchase of 417 acres of land for marketing to industry.

It is envisioned as a new industrial park setting that offers ample rail access while putting a larger parcel of land into the portfolio, potentially opening the door to bigger projects.

The Alliance's land purchase, backed by six local banks, closed Monday on the property which has frontage on U.S. Highway 72 and is near the Kimberly Clark Parkway. Officials gathered in a field off Barnstable Road to make the announcement.

The land is traversed by Norfolk Southern's busy Crescent Corridor main line and the short line Redmont Railway. It also has ample water, natural gas and electrical capacity, with a nearby TVA transmission line offering 60 megawatts of excess capacity.

Vilsack Praises MSU'S Agricultural Research Contributions

Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack (left) toured several U.S. Department of Agriculture research projects being conducted on the Starkville campus of Mississippi State University on Sept. 25 and joined MSU President Mark E. Keenum for a press conference after the tour.

Mississippi State University officials toured U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack around campus on Sept. 25 in a rare opportunity to brief a sitting Cabinet member on significant federally funded research projects.

Vilsack spent a whirlwind afternoon with MSU researchers and students, learning about ongoing research and answering questions and listening to comments from MSU students.

"Mississippi State is targeted right where it needs to be," Vilsack said. "It's important to this country that we continue to have a vital economy, and to do that, we have to have production agriculture, and we need to continue to expand agriculture, and particularly export opportunities."

U.S. News Ranks William Carey #1

The U. S. News and World Report rankings released recently placed William Carey University #1 in "Best Value in the South among Regional Universities." Carey is also ranked #36 among regional universities in the South. WCU's ranking among regional universities increased significantly from #63 last year.

According to U.S. News, the calculation used takes into account a school's academic quality, as indicated by its 2014 U.S. News Best Colleges ranking, and the 2012-2013 net cost of attendance for a student who receives the average level of need-based financial aid. The higher the quality of the program and the lower the cost, the better value a college has.

Automotive Industry Drives Mississippi's Recent Success

Greetings!

Think about automotive and you automatically think Detroit...no wait a minute...I think you really should say Mississippi, right?

Two big announcements this week continue to boost the Magnolia State's position as an automotive center in the South.

Mississippi is on a roll - tires, vehicles, powertrains, engines, automotive parts, steel - it's quite a story.

Kudos to Governor Phil Bryant and MDA for the recent successes -- and to the team up in Tunica for this week's announcement of Feuer Powertrain and the Golden Triangle's work with Yokohama. Big deals for our state.

I am sure we will hear about these successes and more at MEC Hobnob coming up October 31 at the Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Museum. It is a first-class event and we hope you will mark it on your calendar and register today. Where else can you have a magnificent feast, hear our statewide leaders and enjoy great political satire from the national comedy troupe The Capitol Steps, now in their 30th year?

Thanks for your involvement in the future of our state.

Blake Wilson
Keep the faith.
