Mississippi Making
Real Achievement
Is No Accident

Greetings!

Incremental progress day after day, week after week, month after month, year after year results in exponential progress over time.

Mississippi is getting the job done. Want proof? Our State Economist Darrin Webb has it in his latest edition of Mississippi Business, a great monthly economic statistical compilation which you can access with just a click from this e-newsletter. According to Webb and his team, Mississippi is one of three states among the 12 Blueprint States to recover at 100 percent of the pre-recession economy. What state is dead last? Florida. What state is next to last? Alabama. This isn't some new P.R. thing Webb and his staff have dreamed up. This is a solid, independent economic research tool that they have been publishing the same way, every month for many years.

The latest educational achievement results also show significant progress once again in many districts...the same trend lines of improvement in our first four years of a nationally top rated accountability system that Florida experienced in the first four years of its top rated educational accountability system launched some 14 years ago.

Most Mississippi school districts and many school principals have gotten serious about boosting accountability and achievement following tough new standards proposed nearly a decade ago and promoted by then Superintendent of Education Dr. Hank Bounds on MEC's Trailblazer Tour in 2006. Many feared at the time that Mississippi students would not rise to the occasion and that our state would fall further behind. Hank knew differently...and told us if we increased rigor and expectation...students would rise to the challenge. And they did...and will continue to do so.

We hear similar fears today expressed by some about Common Core educational standards long endorsed by MEC and its business leadership. Once again, experience tells us our students when challenged will rise to accept them.

Hard Work and Partnerships Move State Forward

Just 16 years ago when I came to Mississippi I took some ribbing. Our state was struggling. Low wage, low skill jobs were leaving, Alabama had just landed the Mercedes plant...and things weren't looking so bright for what was going to be my new home.

Things have certainly changed...but it hasn't happened by accident. It is the result of consistent hard work by our statewide political leaders over the years...both Democrats and Republicans...and a spirit of partnership for moving forward with initiatives advanced by the private sector through such organizations as MEC.

Just click on the latest MDA annual report and you will see how MDA Executive Director Brent Christensen and his team tell a real story of accomplishments, through programs and initiatives that have been built over the years with the support of Governors, the legislature and private sector leaders, working in partnership with the private sector, often through MEC. It is a remarkable document and a quick and worthwhile read...telling of real achievements for our state. Kudos to Brent and his team!

State on Pathway to Progress

Mississippi today is in the place of greatest opportunity...and Governor Bryant was just in Brazil telling the Mississippi story as he does every chance he gets. This is the way it was in my home state of Delaware 30 years ago when the Governor and legislature passed a law providing incentives for the credit card industry to locate in the state. It was an exciting time because Delaware had been flat on its back. With a public/private partnership Delaware became back then THE hot location. It was booming! But sadly, not today. Last week national news accounts reported that Moody's Analytics listed Delaware as the only state still at risk of slipping into recession. How times have changed!

What made Delaware strong back in the eighties...is what makes Mississippi strong today...good leadership in both the public and private sectors, a real public/private partnership and a can-do attitude. Your continued involvement in MEC and the Blueprint Mississippi Pathway to Progress initiative keeps this engine of opportunity and achievement running at full tilt.

We are making great strides...but we cannot afford to let up because there is still significant ground to cover and our competitor states are doing their best to outdo us every day.

Let's keep our collective pedals to the metal!

Blake Wilson
Keep the faith.

Mississippi's Economic Recovery
at Pre-Recession Level - A Leader Among Blueprint States

Mississippi is one of only three Blueprint Mississippi states to see its economy recover at 100 percent of it's pre-recession levels. A report released this week by State Economist Darrin Webb shows the Mississippi Index of Coincident Indicators continues to climb and has now reached the pre-recession peak of February 2008. According to Webb, the real recovery for Mississippi has been over the last 12-13 months.

The MEC-driven Blueprint Mississippi is providing a road map for boosting the state's economy. MEC's business leaders are joining with other state and local officials to make Mississippi's economy more competitive through the implementation of the Blueprint goals and recommendations. The Blueprint Mississippi Report was released in January of 2012.

"Today's report from State Economist Darren Webb that Mississippi's economy continues to improve brings to the forefront our aggressive growth strategy to retain our existing industry base and recruit new global business investment," said Gov. Phil Bryant. "So far in 2013, we have announced the creation of 4,827 new jobs. This is a testament to Mississippi's workforce and to our efforts in fostering a strong business climate.  Economic development is a dynamic team sport, and I appreciate the work of Mississippi Development Authority Executive Director Brent Christensen and the entire MDA team for their hard work and dedication."

States that reach 100 percent of their peak have fully recovered from the "Great Recession" at least as measured by the Coincident Index, according to Mississippi Business, a publication of the University Research Center, Mississippi Institutions of Higher Learning.

Mississippi Department of Education Report Shows Mississippi Schools Steadily Improving

Mississippi's focus on educational improvements, championed by MEC and other leaders, is paying major dividends as schools across Mississippi showed major gains in the Mississippi Department of Education's accountability ratings.

The biggest gains were in school districts that received an A or B rankings. The report shows 18 school districts achieved an A rating, while 40 percent of all districts were either B or higher. Only 10 percent of the state's districts received an F ranking.

Increasing educational standards and accountability has long been a priority issue for MEC. Working with state educational leaders, MEC's business leadership has promoted these new standards, which are designed to raise accountability and improve the graduation rate. The feedback from the MEC annual road shows - provided by thousands of MEC members across the state - has helped focus attention on the issue and chart a course for improvement.

"The dedication of educational leaders and the unwavering support of MEC's membership is helping Mississippi make great strides in improving educational achievement," said Blake Wilson, President and CEO of MEC.

This focus has resulted in more A-B districts and schools than there are D-F districts and schools. In 2013, 64% of districts ranked C or above, up from 61% in 2012 and 54% in 2011. There are 92 schools statewide that received a failing rating.
