Ingalls Shipbuilding Authenticates Keel for
11th LPD Portland

Mrs. Bonnie Amos, wife of U.S. Marine Corps Gen. James Amos, Commandant of the Marine Corps and ship sponsor of Portland (LPD 27), looks at the ceremonial keel plate with her initials that will remain with LPD 27 during the ship's entire Naval service.

Huntington Ingalls Industries' Ingalls Shipbuilding authenticated the keel of the company's 11th amphibious transport dock ship, Portland (LPD 27).

U.S. Marine Corps Gen. James Amos, commandant of the U.S. Marine Corps and principal speaker for the ceremony, noted the first-in-class USS San Antonio (LPD 17) was presently off the coast of Yemen alongside another Ingalls-built ship, USS Kearsarge (LHD 3).

"That lead ship of this great warship class, with its Marines, is serving the Navy and our nation very proudly today," Gen. Amos said. "It's in harm's way as we speak. Realizing that Portland is scheduled to be the last ship in this class, nothing would warm my heart more and nothing would make me work harder than to continue to build this class of ship."

"We build ships for the greatest Navy and greatest Marine Corps that has ever been," said Ingalls Shipbuilding President Irwin F. Edenzon. "We are proud of the tradition here at Ingalls Shipbuilding. Mrs. Amos, we know that you share our pride in the workmanship and craftsmanship of all of the shipbuilders who are building your ship."

Bonnie Amos, wife of Gen. Amos, commandant of the Marine Corps, is the ship's sponsor. She authenticated the keel of LPD 27 saying it had been "truly and fairly laid." Her name was welded onto a steel plate by Ingalls welder Marty Peterson.

Geographic Alliance  - Shrinking the Miles that Separate Mississippi From Places Around the Globe

Greetings!

Place matters.

The Mississippi Geographic Alliance focuses on helping our students understand their place in the world as Mississippians by training our teachers to better understand how our state relates to different cultures and places around the globe.

This worthy organization is stepping out on September 5 and honoring a true geographic pioneer, who helped shrink the miles that separate the world by introducing the first long-distance paging service - founded right here in Mississippi many years ago - SkyTel. Prior to his leadership in the industry, paging was a local service, but thanks to Ambassador John Palmer's vision, he marketed a way to connect cities around the nation and the globe at a time when it truly was outside the box thinking. It's a fundraiser for an organization worthy of support and it's an honor for a man who has served his state and nation well over many decades.

MEC is pleased to partner with the Mississippi Geographic Alliance in helping promote this worthy event. We hope you will participate, sponsor and send a delegation from your organization.
