MEC Honors Legacy of Service
of Past President Bob Pittman

Greetings!

MEC honored an important leader from our history last week at MEC Hobnob, as the membership of the organization recognized a resolution passed by the Boards of Directors of the Mississippi Economic Council and the MEC M.B. Swayze Foundation creating the Bob W. Pittman Leadership Mississippi Media Scholarship in honor of our second MEC President, who retired in 1998 after 30 years as CEO and a total of 32 years of service.

I have known Bob for most of my career - and always admired from afar his integrity, drive and resourcefulness.  His creation of the second leadership program in America was an example of his forward thinking that positioned MEC for greater success in years to come.

As Leadership Mississippi grad and MEC Past Chair Bill Sones of the Bank of Brookhaven noted in his presentation, thanks to the creation of this program, Leadership Mississippi has graduated leaders including a Governor, Secretary of State, State Treasurer, legislators, judges, mayors and many other governmental and corporate leaders.  Many MEC board members and past chairs are Leadership Mississippi graduates.

The Leadership Mississippi program is more formally named the J.C. and Annie Redd Leadership Mississippi Program in honor of MEC past-chair the late J.C. Redd and his wife and is conducted as part of the program of work of the M.B. Swayze Foundation, named in honor of the first MEC executive, M.B. Swayze.

I am just the third executive of this organization that has been a part of Mississippi's history for well over 60 years, making it a distinct honor to have an opportunity to serve in this post, and to follow such great leaders as M.B. Swayze and Bob Pittman and to continue to work with our chairs and past chairs, board members and other volunteer leaders to continue to raise the voice of business in Mississippi.

We congratulate and honor Bob Pittman for his legacy of service - and know that by providing members of the media an opportunity through scholarship to participate in the important Leadership Mississippi program - this meaningful scholarship will continue to carry out Bob's long-standing vision of building a stronger and more competitive State.

It is a fitting honor for a past MEC executive who made all the difference in his work with this fine organization.

Keep the Faith. Blake Wilson
