Expanding the University of Mississippi School of Medicine and adding 1,000 physicians to the state's workforce are part of Gov. Phil Bryant's vision for strengthening Mississippi's economy by investing in health care.

During three meetings today, Friday, Oct. 26, Gov. Bryant is outlining his vision for growing the state's health care economy and unveiling the findings of a new Blueprint Mississippi health care study. Bryant announced a funding award toward the expansion of the University of Mississippi School of Medicine. The first meeting was held in Biloxi at 7:30 a.m. Meetings are planned for Tupelo at 11:30 a.m. and Jackson at 3:30 p.m. today.

"I am pleased to announce that the Mississippi Development Authority will award $10 million in Community Development Block Grant funds to UMMC to aid in the expansion of its School of Medicine," Bryant said. "Mississippi needs more physicians, and we cannot wait any longer."

Bryant is encouraging new development in the state's larger medical regions through the Mississippi Health Care Industry Zone Act. The legislation, part of Bryant's 'Mississippi Works' agenda, became law this year and provides incentives to certain health care-related businesses that locate in a certified health care zone.

Research quantifies the statewide economic impact

Research of Entergy's activities in Mississippi paints a picture of an investor-owned utility that not only lights up the homes and businesses of more than 400,000 Mississippians, but also lights up the entire state economy. MEC-Member Entergy's total economic impact in Mississippi reaches almost $1 billion, and the low-cost electricity it provides for customers helps encourage business growth and job creation.

"Entergy's first priority is providing safe, reliable and low-cost electricity for our customers," said Haley Fisackerly, Entergy Mississippi president and CEO. "Our residential rates are 29 percent below the national average and 18 percent below the state average. Lower rates not only allow our customers to have more available income for other necessities like food and gasoline, but they also give Mississippi an advantage in competing for economic development projects."

Health Care Study Focuses
on Economic Opportunity

Greetings! .

Today marks a major milestone for Mississippi's future. The Blueprint Mississippi Health Care: An Economic Driver study outlines key opportunities for economic success for our state.

When Blueprint Mississippi was unveiled in January it was touted as an action strategy for putting Mississippi on a path toward prosperity. For this to be successful, we must put into action the goals and recommendations outlined in Blueprint. This comprehensive study on the economic importance of health care is the first step in addressing Blueprint's goal of Promoting Health Care as an Economic Driver.

In his State of the State address in January Gov. Phil Bryant urged MEC to move forward on this study, as health care is a major component of the governor's Mississippi Works initiative. The study was overseen by MEC's M.B Swayze Foundation and funded entirely by a grant from the Mississippi Partnership for Economic Development. There were countless hours of in-kind support from the economic development team at Entergy Mississippi. The research conducted by Newmark Grubb Knight Frank and Subsidium Healthcare is an outstanding example of the numerous opportunities that exist in Mississippi.

This research process sought the input from medical industry leaders from all parts of Mississippi and the final report concentrates on four key areas: Workforce Development, Quality of Life, Business Sustainability and Creation of Economic Wealth. I encourage you to take time to review this quality work.

Governor Bryant is to be commended for his vision on this vital issue in helping chart a course to put Mississippi in the place of greatest opportunity.
