Top 10 Gift Idea List from OGS

Helping you to realize your garden visions for over a decade.

Dear friends,

It is getting time to put the nursery to sleep. We've got most of the plants tucked away in their houses and things are looking pretty forlorn around here!

Never fear though! We are looking through our catalogs and starting to place our orders for next spring. And the trip to the West Coast to check out all the new plant goodies has been booked. Which reminds me - if you are interested in something special, give us a call or email us to let us know what you are looking for. You can also preorder from our existing stock listing on the website!

We have been making our way around the nursery, doing the last of the inventory, and getting things all ready for the winter to come. We still need to put up the deer fences though. Are your gardens ready?

Taking good care of your plants over the winter is something you should be thinking about and we have some items and some information to help you with that. If you have any questions about what to do for specific plants, please give us a call.

As you are getting ready for the holidays, don't forget about the Oriental Garden Supply Gift Certificate - available in all sizes, guaranteed to please any recipient, particularly if you are not sure what they would like. Right now you can get them at 10% off either at the nursery or, new this year, you can purchase a downloadable certificate right on the website! No need to trek out to the nursery. Purchase for a gift recipient or for yourself, and use them at the nursery or for your online order! Great deal!

Reminder: Our Winter Photo Contest is coming up and we will post more details in the next newsletter. Do plan to take pictures of a special plant or your landscape showing its beauty this winter. Note that pictures must be taken between December 15, 2014 and March 15, 2015. Look at that Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Crippsii' in the center of this picture - positively glowing!

We encourage you to come visit us at the nursery before we close at 4 PM on Friday, December 19th. Hours are 9 AM to 4 PM Monday - Friday now. We look forward to seeing your winter pictures and helping you finish your gift list here at OGS!

Happy Holidays,

Al Pfeiffer, Owner

Protecting your plants for winter

Our climate zone often requires that we take extra measures to protect our plants over the harsh winter. Last year's winter should be a reminder that we cannot be lax about this! Selecting plants that are hardy to our area is the first step, along with making sure that the plant goes into winter with enough moisture to fend off the drying winter winds. Here at the nursery, we have polyhouses to protect the tenderest of our plants, but out in your landscape you may need to use other means to protect your investment from the elements. Correct siting, windbreaks, and temporary protective barriers such as burlap screens, hinged wooden covers, and newer products such as Shrub Coat will help. Certain plants may benefit from the spray application of antidessicants, but never use them on Chamaecyparis (Hinoki or other false cypresses) or Thuja (arborvitae) since the waxy coating prevents transpiration in these plants.

Plant protection

Paper or plastic tree wraps are helpful in preventing sunscald on thin-barked plants such as Japanese maples. They are also useful in reducing damage to susceptible young tree trunks from deer, rabbits, moles, and other animals. Liberal use of fencing or sprays or granular applications of critter repellents like Plantskydd in later winter months can also help remove your plants from their dinner menu.

We want your plants to survive and provide a great deal of joy and beauty for you for many years to come so if you have any questions on how to protect specific plants, please give us a call.

Remember this scene from the nursery this summer?

Yes, those are the steps to the office on the left and and it now looks like this when you look down on it.

Planting anything now is pretty much a done deal around these parts. Plus, we have suspended shipping for the winter. But what if you had a plant or two in mind that you were hoping to get your hands on? Check the website first to see if we have it in stock. Preorder it, and we will put a hold on it and keep it safe under cover until spring. If you have a particular variety in mind and we don't currently have it in stock, let us know (use the contact form on the website or email us at sales@orientalgardensupply.com or call the nursery at 585 586-3850). With a deposit, Al will keep an eye out for a special one for you while on his buying trips to the Northwest in mid-winter.

Reminder: you can check our current availabilities on the website by perusing the plants you are interested in. If you register as a customer, you can also download the complete availability listing in either Excel or pdf format from the link under the Resources tab at the top of the webpage to review at your leisure.
