Dear Santa and friends,
You know we have been working really hard at the nursery this year, and soon it will be time to rest a bit and gather our reserves for the coming year. Winter snow storm Boreas dumped a bunch of snow on us just before Thanksgiving and it has been tough sledding around here. Good thing Chris has his mobile office to get around the nursery in. Here are a few more pictures of the nursery you might enjoy. Don't these trees look like snow zombies? That tall one on the left is kind of skeery! We have been making our way around the nursery, doing the last of the inventory, and battening down the hatches so to speak, but it looks like this hatch is still unbuttoned. And just for fun, you've seen our winter pictures. Now show us yours!!! Announcing: Our First Winter Photo Contest. Send in your pictures of a special plant you've purchased at Oriental Garden Supply at any time showing its beauty in the winter. The contest runs until March 15, 2014. Here are the details: - You may submit up to 3 pictures.
- All images must be in digital format only, jpg preferred, and more than 1MB, but less than 5MB in size.
- All images must be emailed to sales@orientalgardensupply.com with the subject line "Photo Contest." No prints or CDs will be accepted.
- Please include any information about the plant highlighted, including its name and age, if known, or when it was purchased at the nursery.
- Amateur photographers only.
- Prizes will be awarded to the top 3 pictures and will be announced in our Spring 2014 Newsletter.
-
Bonus question: Can you identify the round lumps in the following picture?

Odds and ends: - While we have been putting the nursery to bed for the winter, we have also been finding some little goodies that might be of interest to any helper elves out there. More about them below.
- Taking good care of your plants over the winter is something you should be thinking about too and we have some items and some information below to help with that. If you have any questions about what to do for specific plants, please give us a call.
- We offer a deposit plan for overwintering plants we already have in stock or for pre-ordering something specific for next spring. More information below.
- Don't forget about the Oriental Garden Supply Gift Certificate - available in all sizes, guaranteed to please any recipient, particularly if you are not sure what they would like. We are offering 10% off if you bring in the coupon below for certificate values up to $100. As an extra incentive, buy a $100 gift certificate, and get a $20 one to use for yourself or someone else! If you can't make it to the nursery, email or give us a call and we will work out the details with you.
We encourage you to come visit us at the nursery before we close at noon on Saturday, December 21st. Just a reminder though, be sure to wear your mud boots. Hours are 9 AM to 4 PM every day, closed on Sundays, until noon on December 21st. We look forward to seeing your winter pictures and helping you finish your gift list here at OGS! Happy Thanksgivukkah,
Al Pfeiffer, Owner Oriental Garden Supply

Protecting your plants for winter
Our climate zone often requires that we take extra measures to protect our plants over the harsh winter. Selecting plants that are hardy to our area is the first step, along with making sure that the plant goes into winter with enough moisture to fend off the drying winter winds. Here at the nursery, we have polyhouses to protect the tenderest of our plants, but out in your landscape you may need to use other means to protect your investment from the elements. Correct siting, windbreaks, and temporary protective barriers such as burlap screens, hinged wooden covers, and newer products such as Shrub Coat will help. Certain plants may benefit from the spray application of antidessicants, but never use them on Chamaecyparis (Hinoki or other false cypresses) or Thuja (arborvitae) since the waxy coating prevents transpiration in these plants.

Paper or plastic tree wraps are helpful in preventing sunscald on thin-barked plants such as Japanese maples. They are also useful in reducing damage to susceptible young tree trunks from deer, rabbits, moles, and other animals. The use of sprays or granular applications of critter repellents like Plantskydd in later winter months can also help remove your plants from their dinner menu.
We want your plants to survive and provide a great deal of joy and beauty for you for many years to come so if you have any questions on how to protect specific plants, please give us a call.

Want a special plant?
Wow! The winter has come up on us so quickly. Remember this scene from the nursery this fall? Well, now it looks like this: If your garden looks like this too, planting anything now is pretty much a done deal. But what if you had a plant or two in mind that you were hoping to get in? If we have it in stock, put a deposit on it and we will keep it safe under cover until spring. If you have a particular variety in mind and we don't currently have it in stock, let Al know (email Al Pfeiffer or call the nursery at 585 586-3850) and, with a deposit, he will keep an eye out for a special one for you while on his buying trips to the Northwest in mid-winter.Reminder: you can check our current availability listings on the website atorientalgardensupply.com. If you register as a potential customer, you can also download the complete listing in either Excel or pdf format from the link under the Resources tab at the top of the webpage to peruse at your leisure.
