Helping you to realize your garden visions for over a decade.

Dear Friends,

The traditional etymology of "April" is rooted in the Latin verb "to open," an allusion to trees and flowers opening in the spring. But what about windows, convertibles, sidewalk cafes, and the sides of the poly houses at OGS?

We've had an odd spring here so far in the Northeast. Lasting cold temperatures and fairly dry. We are actually looking forward to a little rain to keep the plants in good shape. After all, don't "April showers bring May flowers?"

The best news of all is the opening of our new website! Check it out here Oriental Garden Supply and put us in your favorite bookmarks. We have all sorts of information on the plants, on planting, and will be adding more in the future. Try out our Advanced Search to find the perfect plant, check out the Photo Gallery, and register on the website to save a wishlist or shipping addresses. We are still working out all the little kinks so bear with us if things go wonky for a few minutes. If you find something that you think needs some attention, please let us know - we appreciate any feedback that you might have.

The date April 13th opens the New Year in Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Thailand . . . and it's the Official Opening Day at Oriental Garden Supply! Come out to the nursery, say hello, and poke around to see what goodies the trucks have been bringing us this year. Remember to wear your BOOTS and bring something to set your purchases on in your car. Although we've brought in a lot of crushed stone to upgrade your walking/driving experience around here, we still make a lot of mud! We look forward to seeing you here at OGS beginning Saturday April 13th!

Cheers,

Al Pfeiffer, Owner

Spring highlights:

We hope that you all got a chance to go to the Garden Artisans of Rochester Expo in March. Although there was no theme or judging of the displays, our own Christopher Law, Nursery Manager, did yeoman's duty in designing the combined Oriental Garden Supply/Twin Oaks Lawn and Landscape display in addition to the little gardens scattered around and joining the various landscaper displays at the Expo. If you missed the show, never fear, we have a video of some of the highlights here as well as videos and pictures from past GardenScape shows.

Highlight on Spring plants at the nursery:

It's Spring - what can we say! We have some great plants at Oriental Garden Supply that will add color and interest to your landscape all year round. Wonderful leaf colors and leaf shapes on the Japanese maples, amazing conifers large and dwarf, or ornamentals with beautiful flowers or berries, plus grasses with feathery scapes, or moody ferns, or gorgeous, colorful perennials . . .

Some plants of interest:
  •  Witch hazel
(Hamamelis sp.) - A native shrub that gets short shrift in the summertime, its main show is in late winter/very early spring, just when you are hungry for some color, something blooming. Interesting fact:  Witch hazel branches were used as dowsing rods by the colonists. 'Arnold's Promise' on the left and 'Jelena' on the right.

  • Kintoki Cornel Dogwood (Cornus officinalis Kintoki) - This is a beautiful spring bloomer with continuing interest throughout the year. Little, bright yellow radiating flowers in March to April, attractive exfoliating gray, brown, and orange bark developing with age, and large cherry-like, edible berries forming by September. Spectacular in full sun or partial shade.

  • Fothergilla - An American native, fothergillas sport fragrant, white bottlebrush flowers in the spring before the leaves emerge, then put on a magnificent fall foliage show of yellows, reds, and oranges.
