Helping you to realize your garden visions for over a decade.
Dear Friends,

We've had a very hot, dry summer here in the Northeast and we are looking forward to some relief with the cooler temperatures and some rain this fall. The plants love this seasonal change too and Fall is a great time to be installing new things in your landscape.

Recapping the summer for just a moment - we've had lots of comings and goings, not only with trucks and plants and people visitors, but lots of wildlife too. We've had a black bear sighting in a nearby field, bullfrogs galore in the pond, birdies making nests all over the nursery, and deer testing out the goods. And what about that rascal mink with his tummy full of koi - twice!

Fall is also the time that we hold our annual Sad Little (and BIG) Plant Sale. You can get some great deals on plants that might need just a little loving care or are the last ones of that particular variety hanging out here at the nursery. We get to clear the mats before winter comes and you get to take home some wonderful plants to nurse back to their full glory. More details below!

Come early and remember to wear your boots and bring something to set your purchases on in your car. Although we've brought in a lot of crushed stone to upgrade your walking/driving experience around here, we still make a lot of mud! Remember that delivery service is available if needed. We look forward to seeing you here at OGS!

Cheers,

Sad Little (and BIG) Plant Sale

It's baaaaaack! Yes, the annual Sad Little (and BIG) Plant Sale has been scheduled for Saturday October 13th through Saturday October 20th. Not just a one-day wonder, but a full week of great deals on not-quite-perfect plants! Plus, we've got a COUPON below for you to use on non-sale items (including statuary). We will be pulling items from all over the nursery, both big and small, and pricing them to sell. We still have a lot of plants around here that really want to be planted out, so we encourage you to come out and see what you can find for that empty spot (or spots) in your landscape!

Fall planting information:

Fall is a wonderful time of year, not only for us, but for the plants too. It is an ideal time to be installing all kinds of plants - cool season veggies, lawn grasses, perennials, and both deciduous and evergreen shrubs and trees. Why? The soil is still warm which encourages good root growth and the roots will continue to grow until the ground freezes. These new roots will get the plant off to a quick start in the spring, faster than plants planted in the cool spring soils.

Another important note, even though we have had a good amount of rain recently, we are still operating under a water deficit from the hot, dry summer. Be sure to keep watering until the ground freezes, or assure that your plants are getting enough moisture to survive the drying winter winds. Fall drought, even after the leaves have dropped, can damage a plant, even well-established plantings. Needled evergreens and broadleaf types like rhododendron are particularly vulnerable to desiccation and winterburn. If you have any questions, be sure to ask us!

Highlight on Fall plants at the nursery:

We have some great plants at Oriental Garden Supply that will add color and interest to your fall landscape. Amazing leaf colors or beautiful berries or feathery scapes - what's not to love! Some of the highlights:

    •  Japanese maples - and we have hundreds of them, all sizes.

Japanese maple

    • Beautyberry (Callicarpa Americana) - Native to the US with yellow-green fall foliage, the most striking feature of the beautyberry is the clusters of iridescent purple berries that hug the branches in the fall and winter.

  Beautyberry

    • Fothergilla - Another American native, fothergillas sport fragrant, white bottlebrush flowers in the spring before the leaves emerge, then put on a magnificent fall foliage show of yellows, reds, and oranges.

Fothergilla

    • Virginia sweetspire (Itea viriginica) - These are tough little shrubs that will grow practically anywhere. Beautiful flowers in May and showy red and purple foliage in fall. Mature height and spread is 3-5 feet.

Sweetspire

    • Blueberries - Yes, indeed! Gorgeous deep red leaves in the fall, and blueberries for your cereal in the summer. We have lots!

Blueberry

    • Sweet autumn clematis (Clematis paniculata) - Covered in pure white, lightly fragrant flowers in late summer followed by fluffy, silvery seed heads. This is a hardy climber that is easily controlled by cutting back to 12 inches in the spring.

Sweet autumn clematis

    • Ornamental grasses - Texture, motion, colorful plumes, and fall foliage with yellow, red, purple, and beige hues - we have many sizes to fit your landscape.

Pennisetum Hameln

    • Oakleaf hydrangeas, viburnums, witchhazel, kousa dogwood, hostas . . . and the list goes on.

Go on! Get rid of that dwarf burning bush that really isn't a dwarf and wants to be 12-18 feet high and wide and plant something better in that spot. Come visit us and find some plants to pump up your fall outdoor performance!
