Q1 2014 was 2nd Best Quarter for Installed Solar

GTM Research/SEIA: U.S. Solar Market Insight Report recently released their Q1 2014 findings.  Key figures:

  • The U.S. installed 1,330 MW of solar PV in Q1 2014, up 79% over Q1 2013, making it the second-largest quarter for solar installations in the history of the market.
  • Cumulative operating PV capacity stood at 13,395 MW, with 482,000 individual systems on-line as of the end of Q1 2014. That's enough solar to power 3 million homes!
  • Growth was driven primarily by the utility solar market, which installed 873 MW in Q1 2014, up from 322 MW in Q1 2013.
  • Q1 2014 was the first time residential PV installations exceeded non-residential (commercial) installations nationally since 2002.
  • For the first time ever, more than 1/3 of residential PV installations came on-line without any state incentive in Q1 2014.
  • 74% of new electric generating capacity in the U.S. in Q1 2014 came from solar.
  • Report forecasts that PV installations will reach 6.6 GW in 2014, up 39% over 2013 and nearly double the market size in 2012.

Green Power Providers Still Available

Participating in TVA's Green Power Providers program means that TVA will buy 100% of solar electricity for 20 years, and TVA will pay a premium for years 1-10.  It is one of the best solar programs in the country, and the program is still open.

You Offset 16 Tons (CO2) and What Do You Get?

"You load sixteen tons, what do you get..."

We're changing the song a little to see how many of our customers have offset at least 16 tons, or 32,000 pounds, of carbon dioxide with their solar PV system.  FYI, 16 tons of CO2 is the amount of carbon sequestered by about 12 acres of U.S. forests in one year.

To find our how much carbon you have offset since your system has been operating, try this:

1. Take your lifetime kilowatt-hours (from inverter face plate or via online monitoring) and divide by 1,000 to get megawatt-hours (MWh)

2. Take your MWh and multiply by 1,389 pounds of carbon dioxide (for TVA region). This gives you the total CO2 emissions offset for your system!

To see your environmental offset equivalents, you can visit http://www.epa.gov/cleanenergy/energy-resources/calculator.html and enter your C02 emissions.  There you can learn the equivalent of your offset in cars off the road, acres of trees planted, etc.

Try it out and we could feature your system in our next newsletter!
