U.S. Solar Market Grows 76 Percent in 2012
The U.S. Solar Market Insight report for 2012, published bySEIA and GTM Research, reveals that it was a historic and busy year for the U.S. solar energy industry. Photovoltaic (PV) installations grew 76% over 2011, to total 3,313 megawatts (MW) in 2012. Each market segment (residential, non-residential, and utility) showed growth over 2011, while the overall markets in most states expanded as well. Installed prices for PV systems fell 27% during 2012 and at least 13% in each market segment. Nearly 83,000 homes installed solar PV, and cumulative PV installations in the U.S. surpassed 300,000.
The good news doesn't end there!
- Solar creates jobs: Every second of the work day, more than 2 solar panels are installed by a solar worker on American soil. Today, solar employs 119,000 workers in the U.S.
- Solar powers homes: There is now more than 7.7 gigawatts of cumulative solar electric capacity installed in the U.S., enough to power more than 1.2 million American households.
- Solar drives our economy: In 2012, new U.S. solar installations were valued at $11.5 billion - more than double the $5.5 billion value of installations in 2010.
- Tennessee ranked 13th in the nation in residential solar capacity installed (3 MW). TN Ranked 19th in 2011 with 1.4 MW.
- Tennessee ranked 14th in the nation in total solar capacity installed (26.9 MW). TN Ranked 16th in 2011 with 18 MW.

Update: TVA Green Power Providers at 70% Capacity
On January 1, TVA opened the Green Power Providers (GPP) program for 2013, and they are currently approving applications. Under GPP, TVA will buy solar PV generation at 9 cents/kilowatt-hour above the current rate (about 10 cents/kWh). This totals about 19 cents per kWh - nearly double the retail rate!
TVA has implemented a program capacity limit of 7.5 megawatts (MW) for 2013. Currently, TVA has approved applications for over 5 MW, about 70% of total capacity. For residential-sized systems (under 10 kW), program capacity is at 50%.
If you or anyone you know is interested in installing solar, now is the time to get your TVA application submitted. To get started, contact LightWave Solar. We will provide a free solar consultation to help you decide if solar is right for you. Then, we help coordinate the GPP application, and help secure your approval.
TVA program dashboard is updated every Friday. Click here to visit TVA website.
