Friends:
These words from Dean Gary Hall of the Washington Cathedral regarding Memorial Day touched me deeply:
"Memorial Day ensures that the conflicts that have shaped our nation's character will not pass from our national memory. It reminds us that these conflicts have a cost, measured in the loss and upheaval of human lives. We set aside time on Memorial Day to reflect on all the consequences of that cost, remembering that it would be even greater without the dedication of those who have served, even died, for the safety of others."
On Monday in the Christ Church Burial Ground, at 12 Noon, we will have a brief service for the honored dead buried there. In our remembrances this weekend, let us also offer up to God the many, though not soldiers, have suffered loss in the upheavals of human history, past and present.
Theologian Miroslav Volf writes, "Remembering well is one key to redeeming the past; and the redemption of the past is itself nestled in the broader story of God's restoring of our broken world to wholeness -- a restoration that includes the past, present, and future."
Timothy Safford
Service Note: This Sunday's 11 AM service is a Morning Prayer liturgy, without Eucharist. The Holy Eucharist is, as always, at 9 AM.

Reaching Out with the Sages This Sunday morning, the Sages invite you to write a note to parishioners Sheldon and Lucy Hackney, now living on Martha's Vineyard. These notes will greatly encourage and cheer on Lucy, who has been diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer Disease, and Sheldon, who has ALS. Your note will be delivered with a basket of Philadelphia and Christ Church goodies (donations welcome!). Stop and write your note after services by the table near the snacks, or drop off a note Sunday June 2 or 9, or bring to the church office. Do you know of other parishioners, no longer attending regularly, who would be blessed by receiving such a basket full of love and good wishes from the Sages? This will be an ongoing ministry. Please let Nathalie Bartle, nb35@drexel.edu, Sandy Karger, 98sandra@comcast.net or the Rev. Palmer Hartl, kphartl@aol.com know of names.
Vocational Discernment Group Join the Rev. Kate Spelman and parishioner Shana Kaplanov in the Vocational Discernment Group to explore the work (paid and unpaid) that makes life fulfilling and permits us to use our God-given talents in a meaningful way. Thoughtful readings will open up space for spirit-filled conversation. Possible topics include changing careers, parenting as vocation, adjusting to retirement, ways to volunteer with intention, and developing a stronger prayer life. No topic is off limits - bring your own questions and puzzles! The group will meet next Sunday at 12:30PM. If you're interested in participating or have questions, contact Shana Kaplanov at shana.weber@gmail.com. Personal Computing for Nontechnical People Join Christ Church parishioners with a knack for technology to explore today's personal computers in nontechnical language, geared toward people without backgrounds in computer technology. Sophia Cisler, an experienced science and math teacher, will discuss what the new generation of gizmos can (and can't) do for you. Sophia will graduate this summer from Jefferson Medical College and begin a residency at Penn as an anesthesiologist. Contact Cecilia Wagner at cwagner@christchurchphila.org or Allan Hasbrouck at al.hasbrouck@verizon.net if you plan to attend one or more of the sessions.
