Good attendance earns Central freshman a free car from Youngblood

Central High School freshman Kuang Ying just won a new Kia Sol from Youngblood Nissan Chrysler Kia.

"I'm very happy I won," he said. "I wish I could drive it home today."

Each high school drew five entries as semi-finalists for the final drawing, which was only open to SPS high school students with 95 percent or higher attendance. Students with perfect attendance received two entries. These semi-finalist students participated in the final drawing for the car on Thursday, May 22, 4 p.m., at Youngblood Nissan Chrysler Kia, 3410 S. Campbell.

Harrison and Weaver elementary schools receive perfect attendance celebrations

Two elementary schools have earned a special celebration for outstanding attendance. Partner in Education Papa John's Pizza provides a pizza party to two SPS schools with the highest percentage of the school's student population achieving perfect attendance. This year, Harrison Elementary School had 61 students achieve perfect attendance, totalling 14.99 percent of the site's student population. Weaver Elementary School also will receive a pizza party, with 35 students achieving perfect attendance for the entire school year, or 11.08 percent of the school's student population.

In addition to parties for the top two schools, more than 1,100 students had perfect attendance for the 2013-2014 school year. Each student across the district will receive free pizza coupons.

School board authorizes parking lot purchase for CHS

Central High School will have additional parking space available when school starts in August with the acquisition of an existing parking lot near the school.

The Springfield school board May 20 approved the purchase of a 75-space lot owned by the Springfield-Greene County Library District for $150,500. The lot, which has been rented by SPS for several years, is located across Jefferson Avenue from the school just north of the Midtown Carnegie Branch Library.

PYP exhibition showcases student achievement

Fifth-grade students in the Primary Years Programme will showcase their end-of-year projects from 1 to 3 p.m. Friday, May 23, at Boyd Elementary School. Students will present research projects they have completed in their final year of the International Baccalaureate program for elementary students.

"All are welcome to come and share in the celebration of learning with our IB students," said James Grandon, principal at Boyd. "Exhibition will be held in the fifth-grade classrooms and visitors are welcome."

Participating PYP fifth-graders are required to engage in a collaborative inquiry that involves students identifying, investigating and offering solutions to issues or problems. The final exhibition of their project is intended for students to demonstrate independence and responsibility for their own learning while exploring multiple perspectives. Weller and Disney partnership raises $1,600

One student's refuse is another student's treasure. The first weekend of May, neighbors and neighborhood communities in the Disney Elementary School area donated their unsold garage sale merchandise to Weller Elementary School. Volunteers from both the Disney and Weller communities went from curb to curb, collecting items that went unclaimed and loading them into two trucks from the Victory Mission.

"Victory Mission hauled everything for us," said Marilyn Monroe, principal at Weller Elementary School. "Disney Elementary parent Sarah Garton secured and coordinated the trucks that hauled everything. We also had Boy Scouts from Disney, we had parents from Disney who helped us pick up items in neighborhoods, and we had volunteers from the Weller community who helped load items into the trucks. We packed those two trucks to the very top with donated items."

The two trucks made their way to Weller, where volunteers unloaded items to be sorted in the school's gymnasium. PTA members sorted through the collected donations, and on May 8-9, the school hosted a huge garage sale. More than $1,600 was raised for the school's Cents of Pride store, which provides hygiene, clothing, shoes and more for students who earn them by collecting PRIDE bucks.

"The Weller PTA was amazing throughout this whole process," said Monroe. "It was a really big job, and the Victory Mission picked up everything we didn't sell. But in all, we made $1,000 more than last year. That'll buy a lot of shoes and items that fill the holes of things that don't get donated to the Cents of Pride store."

In addition to raising money for the PRIDE and Family Pride stores, Monroe was pleased that the garage sale helped raise awareness about the two schools' partnership in both communities.

"What amazes me and what is so important is how powerful partnerships can be and what can be done when everyone works together," she said. "That's why we want to honor them at a special Volunteer Dinner May 20. We got to keep the word out that there, that these volunteers can do amazing things for our students."

A special Volunteer Dinner honoring Weller and Disney elementary volunteers will be held held Tuesday, May 20. During the evening, students will serve volunteers and recognize Weller Partners in Education High Street Baptist Church, Evangel University, Disney Elementary School and more.
