YORK Supports Study on NYC Soil Bank Material Use in Community Gardens

The NYC Office of Environmental Remediation (OER - website) launched an innovative program to study the use of clean native soil from the NYC Clean Soil Bank to clean up community gardens in NYC. The study, initiated by OER, is being completed in collaboration with the NYC Parks Department and Brooklyn College.

YORK is working closely with the OER team to analyze the soil samples and provide data for the program in a turnkey EDD format.

For more information on this program, contact the OER at 212-676-0459. View their newsletter here

Welcome Doug Bertel
to YORK's Client Service Team

Doug grew up in northeast Ohio, captain of the high school swim team, class of 2002. Graduated with a Bachelor's of Science in Environmental Chemistry from Cleveland State University in 2006 and a Master's of Science in Geomicrobiology in 2011.

He worked in several enviornmental labs as as technician in extractions, metals, semi-volatiles, and volatiles. He had two oil field jobs: first was as a mud logger on oil and gas rigs in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia collecting rock cuttings and informing the rig's company man how close to oil and gas deposits they were.  Second was as an environmental inspector, doing hourly, daily, and weekly inspections on oil and gas drilling rigs throughout Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia to ensure they were operating in an environmentally safe manner.

Doug moved to Connecticut and to YORK Lab in 2012. He worked in the lab for 3 years and has now joined our client service team.

EPA Initiative on Power Plant Effluents

The EPA sets limit for toxic pollutants released into American waterways by steam electric power plants. A recent article, viewable on the Environmental Expert site, written by Matthew Daly in the Associated Press informs the industry of this new rule. It will remove 1.4 billion pounds of toxic metals discharged around the nation each year. Among these toxins are mercury, lead, selenium and arsenic. This pollution reduction will lower contamination to sediment in waterways which harms aquatic life and can affect drinking water. The EPA also set new rules to reduce air pollution from oil refineries. These plants will have to monitor air for emissions like benzene to protect local communities.
