 YORK TALK | MAY 2015

York's Robert Q. Bradley Elected
Chairperson of Connecticut's ELAC

York's Robert Q. Bradley was recently elected Chairperson of the Connecticut Department of Public Health's Environmental Laboratory Advisory Committee (CT-ELAC).

CT-ELAC committee members are appointed by the Commissioner of the Connecticut Department of Public Health to advise the State on issues related to environmental laboratory regulation and technical matters.

The group is also involved in providing technical assistance to the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP).

In addition to his role as Chairperson, Bob is active in the CT DEEP QA/QC work group which is involved in many regulatory initiatives, including updating the CT RCP protocols.

TERRACORE use for 5035
Analysis of Volatile Organic Soil

A complete set includes:

(2) 40ml with DI Water & a stir-bar
(1) 40ml with Methanol
(1) unpreserved 40ml vial
(1) Plastic "terracore" tool

We often recommend the use of Terracore Sampling Kit for 5035 analysis of volatiles in soil.  Clients have asked us to include instructions in our next YorkTalk....

With the plunger seated in the handle, push the plastic terracore into freshly exposed soil until the sample chamber is filled (chamber will deliver approximately 5 grams of soil).

Wipe all soil or debris from the outside of the terracore sampler. Remove excess soil that extends beyond the mouth of the sampler. Rotate the plunger that was seated in the handle to align it with the slots in the body. Place the mouth of the sampler into the vial and extrude the sample by pushing the plunger down. When capping each vial, be sure to remove any soil or debris from the top and/or threads of the vial for a proper capped seal.

The plastic Terracore sampler is a single use device. It should not be cleaned and reused. A new sampler should be used for each sample set. Videos demonstrating the proper use can be viewed below or from our website

380 Development Site in Staten Island

York Analytical Laboratory has been working with a unique brownfield development project in Staten Island on the Arthur Kill, just south of the Goethals Bridge.

The 380 Development Site, a former major oil storage facility on a 672.5 acre water front property situated in northwestern Staten Island, is a brownfield development project regulated by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) that can receive approved fill material by barge or truck in preparation for future non-residential development on the site.

380 Development has two acceptance criteria depending on where material is placed on site. These are referenced in the DEC environmental remediation regulations specifying the "Protection to Groundwater" and "Commercial Soil Cleanup Objectives" contained in Table 375-6-8(b).

380 Development verifies and tracks every load approved for delivery to the site. After DEC approval of the material source, 380 Development 1) provides a site and project specific manifest with bar code to each fill project, 2) visually inspects material upon arrival, and 3) logs location and lift info in the site ARC-GIS data base.

380 Development  material handler on site is positioned on a deck barge to off-load a barge from a regional dredging and sediment processing project.

Individually Certified
 Summa Canisters

We've seen record breaking volume in requests for "individually certified summa canisters" for conducting TO-15 analyses. This certification requires the lab to perform an actual TO-15 analysis on each canister after cleaning which is beyond the typical evacuation, cleaning and batch certification that YORK performs. The extra step does require additional prep-time when fulfilling a client order for summa air canisters, and must be requested with advanced notice. This certification is clearly cited in the analyses report.

In the case that you are working with the NYC School Construction Authority this summer, it is helpful for you to know that YORK is one of the few audited and approved laboratories by the NYC SCA for TO-15 and has the resources to hand-deliver summa cans to job sites in the NYC area.

Clients should use YORK's "Air-specific" Chain of Custody when ordering TO-15 work. Click here to access the easy to use, downloadable copy.

BRIDGEPORT BLUEFISH in 2015!

We're very excited to announce another season of sponsoring the Bridgeport Bluefish in 2015. We hope to see a good number of York clients come out to the lab for a tour and to enjoy a minor league baseball game. We've already had a couple clients tour the lab this year and have received very positive feedback. For those in Long Island, the stadium is next to the Ferry station.  Click here for the Bluefish schedule.

Looking forward to seeing you soon...
