YORK TALK | MARCH 2015

York offers new service for utilities to determine the useful life of transformers

Aging of transformer winding insulation is an important concern in the asset management of transformers.  York Analytical Laboratories (YORK) has developed an in-house method to assist utilities determine the useful life of their electrical transformers.

The method involves High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) analysis of the transformer oil for certain degradation products of transformer winding paper insulation known as Furanic compounds.

The functional relationship between Furanic compounds in the transformer oil and the degree of polymerization are used to predict the current condition and useful life of the transformer without removing the transformer from service.

There are several factors that contribute to transformer winding insulation aging but temperature is generally the most important factor as it influences not only the aging of the paper, but also aging of the oil.

As the paper insulation ages, it loses some of its mechanical strength, becoming more susceptible to tearing or bursting. Once mechanical damage of the insulation has occurred, movement of the conductors is likely, resulting in changing voltage stresses and electrical discharge. These eventually could lead to catastrophic failure in the transformer.

YORK LABS COLLABORATING WITH
NYC MAYOR'S OFFICE OF REMEDIATION ON
NEW SOIL REUSE PROJECT

The New York City Mayor's Office of Environmental Remediation (OER) held an important training and education event on February 12th certifying Brownfield Industry Professionals.  YORK sponsored the event and was on hand to participate in the meeting and talk with many of the 350+ NYC environmental professionals in attendance.

During the meeting Dan Walsh, Director of the NYC OER, thanked YORK for its support and collaboration on a new pilot program that is investigating innovative ways to deliver clean, native soil to New York City projects in need of such material.

The OER program in development that YORK is collaborating on will transfer soil from development sites within the City to communities and non-profits that are in need of soil for environmental improvement projects.

OER seeks to reduce the financial and environmental costs associated with the purchase and transport of soil to these projects while ensuring it meets the highest quality standards possible. YORK will provide analytical data from the target development sites to demonstrate that the material is suitable for the proposed end use.
