In my over 35 years of working and managing environmental analytical laboratories, I have always remained a student of technology. It is a critical aspect of operational excellence that fuels growth and allows laboratories to service client needs in an ever changing regulatory and economic driven marketplace. Unlike other business drivers that build and grow at a steady pace, technology progresses in huge leaps and bounds every few years or more. Early last year after many years of utilizing Perkin-Elmer's Inductively Coupled Plasma Spectrometers (ICP) to perform our metals analyses, we acquired a new ICP/MS and Dual View ICP that have new technology to address extremely low levels of detection. Advances in ICP technology for a period of almost ten years were limited to "bells and whistles upgrades." Our new ICP and ICP/MS instruments provide York with the most cutting-edge, commercially available technology and will likely serve us for many years to come.
In 1990, I designed York's first Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) - the life blood of any laboratory - using a platform that provided us the tools we needed at the time to deliver on client requests. Over the years we successfully customized our system without having to change our LIMS platform. This month, we have put in place the most radical technology-based change in York's history - a state-of-the art LIMS designed specially for environmental labs that forms the backbone of the company's new systems infrastructure. The power of this new LIMS has already allowed our team to implement a host of high impact changes to workflow and operational activities while meeting ever-changing laboratory licensing issues. One of the new client offerings I am most excited about is the flexibility we have to create a suite of the most sophisticated and detail rich laboratory reports and Electronic Data Deliverables (EDD) while retaining the simplicity and elegance our clients have come to expect from York. York's Customer Service Team will be in touch with clients to answer questions and discuss the new laboratory report presentation and client services. This year is going to be an exciting year at York as we unleash the power of our LIMS. Please contact us at 203-325-1371 or via email with any questions or comments. We look forward to talking with you. Thank you and best of luck in 2010!
