UPDATE: Remediation at Sleepy Hollow Duracell Plant

A new investigation into suspected mercury and lead contamination in New York's Sleepy Hollow will soon begin as part of a cooperative agreement between the Gillette Company and the New York State DEC, Commissioner Pete Grannis announced a few weeks ago.
The agreement stems from an initial assessment by DEC that showed some properties may have residual soil contamination from the historic operations that took place at the former Duracell battery site.
Here is the NYS DEC press release dated 12/28/09 with details of the new DEC investigation.
Here is an article from the local newspaper with additional details.

Gowanus and Newtown Not Created Equal
A few weeks ago, the Bloomberg Administration announced that it would be supporting the designation of Newtown Creek as a Superfund site, a stark deviation from its position on the same designation for the Gowanus Canal, where the city is vehemently opposed to a cleanup overseen by the EPA and instead has devised an alternative plan to get the job done itself.

NYC E-Designation Website

An E-Designation is a NYC zoning map designation that indicates the presence of an environmental requirement pertaining to potential Hazardous Materials Contamination or Air Quality impacts on a particular tax lot. E-Designations are established on the Zoning Map by the Department of City Planning and City Council as a part of a zoning change/action.
The NYC E-Designation Environmental Review Program - formerly administered by the NYC DEP - for Hazardous Materials, Air Quality, and Window/Wall Noise Attenuation is now administered by the NYC Office of Environmental Remediation (OER).
The NYC OER has created a website (click here) that provides detailed information on administering work at E-designation sites.
The NYC Department of City Planning also has a FAQ section related to E-designation projects on their website ( click here).
York has extensive experience in providing analysis for E-designation projects and can work with clients on pricing efficiencies related to the required set of tests.
