The New York Governor's office issued a press release outlining 24 projects recently funded in support of environmental remediation, community revitalization, job creation and the expansion of the tax base in neighborhoods that have been adversely affected by multiple brownfield sites or economic distress. |

PASSAIC AVE CLEAN-UP RECEIVES GREEN LIGHT
The Jersey Journal reports the NJ DEP has designated Kearny's Passaic Avenue Redevelopment Zone as a Brownfield Redevelopment Area, paving the way for up to $5 million a year of state money to test and clean up contaminated properties.

Researchers Testing Nanotech for Hazardous Waste Cleanups
Scientists and environmental regulators are hoping that some extremely tiny materials might make a huge difference in hazardous waste cleanups.
Researchers are exploring whether nanoscale materials -- so named because they are as small as 1/100,000 the width of a human hair -- can be cleanup assets. They have two reasons for optimism: Nanomaterials' size lets them penetrate otherwise impossible-to-reach groundwater or soil, and their engineered coatings allow them to stay suspended in groundwater, a major asset in cleanups.
If they work, nanomaterials could slash cleanup prices by avoiding the extraordinary costs and risks of hauling materials away for burning or burial.

EPA RELEASES NEW GUIDANCE ON PCBS IN CAULK OF OLD BUILDINGS
-- YORK PROVIDES PCB TESTING FOR NY, CT and NJ TO SCHOOLS AND BUILDING MANAGERS --
EPA announced new guidance for school administrators and building managers with  important information about managing PCBs in caulk and tools to help minimize possible exposure.
The EPA also released additional research that looks at several unresolved scientific questions that must be better understood to assess the magnitude of the problem and identify the best long-term solutions.

Long Island Lawmakers: Probe into former gas production plants

To minimize potential contamination from handling and to reduce sample preparation time, we suggest that all soil samples submitted for volatiles analysis (this includes the STARS list) include a separate 2 oz. glass jar filled with little or no headspace.
A single 4 oz. or 8 oz. glass jar can still be used for all other soild sample parameters. |
