On July 17, the U.S. House of Representatives approved $300,000 in federal resources for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers study currently underway at the Gowanus Canal.

The Army Corps has partnered with the NYC DEP to complete the project and assess current environmental problems at the Gowanus Canal. The goal of the study is to determine the restoration measures needed to reduce contamination, create wetland areas, and improve water movement and quality.

SPOTLIGHT ON:
YORK WET CHEMISTRY TEAM

wetchem

Although automation has become increasingly a larger part of contemporary environmental analysis, the art of traditional chemistry is alive and well at the heart of York Analytical Laboratories.  Led by Tony DeCarlo - who has worked at York for more than 10 years - the wet chemistry team plays a most critical role in performing difficult analysis that require a high level of expertise.

Robert Q. Bradley, York's Managing Director says, "Quality experience and flawless team work are essential to delivering for our clients in the wet chemistry area.  Our teams have worked together for many years and understand the importance of strong communications and transparency in their work."

Key challenges of running a successful wet chemistry laboratory include the proactive management of sample holding times and rush requests, as well as ensuring directives from clients are fully implemented to meet regulatory reporting requirements.

"We are constantly looking to cross-train our teams on all methods so no matter who is on the bench, we are able to have consistent high-quality results," says DeCarlo. "York is a true 'chemists-chemist' lab."

Bloomberg News Reports on Environmental Issues with GM Sleepy Hollow Facility

sleephallow
GM closed its minivan factory in Sleepy Hollow, NY, 13 years ago, after a record 82-year run for a company plant.  Today the property's future is still undecided.  The recent feature story (click here) discusses the issues facing GM and New Jersey- based Roseland Property Co. who spent $11 million on developing the site and on cleaning lead, methane and other toxins out of its soil before scrapping plans about a year ago to build 1,000 homes, offices, stores and a river walk.
GETTING THE MOST OUT OF YOUR LAB
 tip of month
Filling out chain-of-custody forms properly is a critical step in ensuring fast and accurate testing results.  Without clear instruction as to which analysis is needed, laboratory log-in staff must delay sample analysis preparation until clarification is obtained.  Sometimes this can delay analysis by one or two days depending on how difficult it is to reach the field sampling team.

Easy Reminders to Better Chain-of-Custody Processing:
1. Write legibly (print is always preferred)
2. Don't forget to include chain-of-custody form in sample cooler
3. Be as specific as possible as to which test method is required
4. Include accurate billing and report address instructions
