Dutch-Crust Pear Pie
In honor of this month's Pear Fair, here's a great recipe for pear pie! A tradition at the fair, some of us Bogle's fondly recall taking part in the pear pie-eating contest in our youth!  But we promise, if you make this one, we won't rush you...

Ingredients:

1 pie crust, either store bought or homemade (we won't tell!)

3 cups ripe Bartlett pears, coarsely chopped

1 egg, beaten

1 tsp vanilla

1 T. all purpose flour

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1 cup sour cream

Topping

1 cup all-purpose flour

1/2 cup quick cooking oats

1/2 cup packed brown sugar

1/2 cup butter

Preparation:

  • Prepare pie crust according to your directions for a one crust, fruit-filled pie.
  • In a medium bowl, mix the pears, egg, vanilla, 1 tsp. flour, sugar and sour cream.  Pour into the cooled pie shell.
  • In another mixing bowl, combine topping ingredients, blending with a fork or pastry blender until coarse crumbs form. Sprinkle evenly over the filling.
  • Heat oven to 350 degrees.  Bake 40-50 minutes or until top is light golden brown.  Check frequently, and if topping appears to be getting too brown, cover with foil.
  • Cool 30 minutes before serving!  And of course, it must be a la mode!  Try a glass of our Petite Sirah Port or our off-dry Gewrtztraminer with this one...
