Come to the Women's Luncheon on June 12

The Women's Group of St. John's Church (AWE) would like to invite all women of the parish to attend our annual meeting on Sunday, June 12 at 12:15pm in Chisholm Hall.  We need your input as we plan a fall event, March retreat, and the St. Fiacre Flower Festival for 2017.  In addition, we will determine our missionary giving for the upcoming year.

Please bring a salad to share.  Dessert and Iced Tea will be provided.  Sign up on the Shine Mission Bulletin Board in the Parish House 1st floor hallway.  Don't miss this wonderful celebration of God's blessings!

Give our visiting priests in June a robust St. John's welcome!

Fr. Derek & Clifford King Harbin will be away from St. John's from June 3-23 to explore the Cradle of Christianity with the Biblical Archaeological Society.  During this "mini-sabbatical," led by a university professor who is an expert in this era, they will travel the coastline around the Aegean Sea in Greece and Turkey to visit the sites of churches founded by the Apostle Paul as well as the churches mentioned by our patron saint in Revelation.  Highlights will include visits to Hagia Sophia (Byzantine Christianity's masterpiece that was the world's largest cathedral for over 1000 years) and the Island of Patmos where John received his vision that would become the book of Revelation.

During this incredible opportunity for these parish leaders, members of St. John's will have the opportunity to experience the gifts of two exceptional priests.

On Sunday, June 5, we will once again welcome Fr. Richard Ullman at all three Eucharists.  Fr. Richard graduated from Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge, Massachusetts and shared during his last visit to St. John's a compelling account of fellow seminary classmate, Jonathan Myrick Daniels, who died protecting a young black girl during the civil rights movement of the 1960s.  For Sunday, June 12 & 19, as well as our Wednesday Healing Eucharists, St. John's welcomes Fr. John Baldwin.  Fr. John is the dynamic, retired rector of Emmanuel Episcopal Church in (Kempsville) Virginia Beach who is looking forward to his time with the people of St. John's!

As you keep the Harbins in your prayers for their journey, don't miss joining these exceptional priests and your sisters and brothers at St. John's as worship continues uninterrupted on Sundays and Wednesdays during the month of June.  Let's give them a robust St. John's welcome!

Pastoral emergencies while the Rector is away

If you experience a pastoral emergency during June 3-23, please contact Senior Warden Dick Devers (757.630.6884) or Junior Warden Nancy Johnson (757.646.2647).  They will be able to connect you with the appropriate pastoral resources.

Banns of Marriage

I publish the Banns of Marriage between Katherine Emily Sarandria and Tyler Charles Redes of Norfolk, Virginia.  If any of you know just cause why they may not be joined together in Holy Matrimony, you are bidden to declare it.

The marriage ceremony between Katie and Tyler is planned for Friday, June 24, at 4:30pm in St. John's historic worship space.  Your prayers and presence are requested.

Congratulations to Fr. Derek (of St. John's) and Fr. Charles (of Trinity) will lead the adult track.  Register using this link today!

Want to volunteer for Kidz Kamp?  Your online Safe Church (abuse prevention) Training must be up to date and your certificate of completion filed in the Parish Office.  To complete this online training, send an email to Susan Allen, Safeguarding Online Administrator, with "Safeguarding Online Registration for St. John's Church, Portsmouth" as the subject.  Include your full name and that you will be volunteering with children for our Kidz Kamp Vacation Bible School.  You will receive a reply email with your user login and password so that you can complete the online training and print the certificate of complete to bring to the parish office.

Want a St. John's name badge?  Are you ready to look outward and be welcoming, greeting those you do not know before you greet your friends and offering hospitality to those you meet?  If your answer is "yes," then complete a name badge request form found in Chisholm Hall.  These badges have a magnetic back (which should be kept away from medical devices and credit/debit cards).  Thanks to Charlie Burlingame, Lee Moore, and Taylor Pules, we now have a metal board on which to store your name badge if you desire.  Look for it in the first floor hallway of the Parish House.

The Parishioner Corner of our Website has news you can use.  Here you can access the May 2016 Parish Directory, parish handbook, worship ministry schedules, and read approved minutes of vestry discussions and actions as well as parish financial reports.  Need or don't remember the password?  Contact the parish office.
