Community Palm Sunday Celebration is Sunday

A tradition for many decades, Christians from all over Portsmouth will meet in the courtyard of the historic Norfolk County Courthouse (Court and High Streets in Olde Towne Portsmouth) to celebrate Jesus' triumphant entry into Jerusalem.

This year's celebration begins at 10:30am.  Stay after the 9am Eucharist or come early as this celebration serves as the Liturgy of the Palms for our 11am Classic Eucharist.

Meet us at the Courthouse or join the group leaving Chisholm Hall at 10:15am.  See you Sunday!

More than Green Beer

Patrick was born into a Christian family somewhere on the northwest coast of Britain in about 390. His grandfather had been a Christian priest and his father, Calpornius, was a deacon.  When Patrick was about sixteen, he was captured by a band of Irish slave-raiders. He was carried off to Ireland and forced to serve as a shepherd. When he was about twenty-one, he escaped and returned to Britain, where he was educated as a Christian. He tells us that he took holy orders as both priest and bishop and a vision then called him to return to Ireland. This he did about the year 431.

Tradition holds that Patrick landed not far from the place of his earlier captivity, near what is now known as Downpatrick (a "down" or "dun" is a fortified hill, the stronghold of a local Irish king). He then began a remarkable process of missionary conversion throughout the country that continued until his death, probably in 461.  Within a generation of his death, all of Ireland had become Christian.

Holy Patrick, on this your feast day, we ask for your prayers.  May God's Holy Spirit equip us to be good evangelists for Jesus Christ as we move into our neighborhood!

Episcopal Bishops issue a Word to the Church

The House of Bishops of The Episcopal Church, meeting in retreat, unanimously approved the following Word  to the Church.

A Word to the Church
Holy Week 2016

"We reject the idolatrous notion that we can ensure the safety of some by sacrificing the hopes of others."

On Good Friday the ruling political forces of the day tortured and executed an innocent man. They sacrificed the weak and the blameless to protect their own status and power. On the third day Jesus was raised from the dead, revealing not only their injustice but also unmasking the lie that might makes right.

In a country still living under the shadow of the lynching tree, we are troubled by the violent forces being released by this season's political rhetoric. Americans are turning against their neighbors, particularly those on the margins of society. They seek to secure their own safety and security at the expense of others. There is legitimate reason to fear where this rhetoric and the actions arising from it might take us.

In this moment, we resemble God's children wandering in the wilderness. We, like they, are struggling to find our way. They turned from following God and worshiped a golden calf constructed from their own wealth. The current rhetoric is leading us to construct a modern false idol out of power and privilege. We reject the idolatrous notion that we can ensure the safety of some by sacrificing the hopes of others. No matter where we fall on the political spectrum, we must respect the dignity of every human being and we must seek the common good above all else.

We call for prayer for our country that a spirit of reconciliation will prevail and we will not betray our true selves.

The Episcopal Church House of Bishops met in retreat March 11 - 15 at Camp Allen Conference Center in Navasota, TX.

Don't miss Holy Saturday morning, 3/26 @ 9:30am

On Saturday morning, a brief liturgy helps us observe how Jesus' body lay dead in the tomb.  How empty our world would be without the presence of the risen Jesus!  During this service, our catechumens, who are preparing for baptism, will recite the Apostles' Creed in anticipation of their evening baptisms.  Following worship, those who would like to help for about two hours to prepare our worship space and Chisholm Hall for our Easter celebrations are invited to participate.  There are many jobs that don't involve flowers, too!

Sign up for the Great Vigil of Easter, 3/26 @ sunset (7:22pm)

According to the Gospel accounts, the resurrection of Jesus occurred "on the third day" (which begins at sunset on Saturday night).  At sunset (after 7:22pm) our Bishop will join us as we celebrate the Great Vigil and First Eucharist of Easter, the most ancient feast of Christianity that celebrates with all our senses the central truth of the Christian faith: that Jesus Christ is risen from the dead.  Bring a bell or noisemaker to use as we proclaim the Lord's resurrection.  We begin outside with the lighting of the new fire of Easter and process by candlelight into the worship space.  We hear the story of God's salvation, renew our baptismal vows, baptize and confirm, and are filled with Christ's presence as we receive the risen Savor's Body and Blood.

For those who love a great party, the festive reception that follows in Chisholm Hall is a not-to-miss opportunity!  St. John's will supply champagne and non-alcoholic punch, tenderloin, shrimp and wedding cake (celebrating that we, the church, are the bride of Christ).

Here's where the wonderful cooks of St. John's come in: bring your favorite, elegant savory hors d'oeuvres (finger food appetizers) on a special, beautiful plate or tray to share on this night to complete our feast!

Want to help with this reception?  Contact Margaret Perkins.  We especially need food "receivers" from 6:15-7:20pm at the parking lot entrance.  The only entrance to the church for evening worship will be at the corner of London and Washington Streets.  Chisholm Hall will be closed as a pass through space.

Please sign up on the "Feast" mission bulletin board  (Parish House first floor hallway) to let us know what you will be bringing! If you have any questions about the logistics of this request, please contact the Parish Office.

Miscellany

Christian Formation for all ages is on break for Palm Sunday (3/20) and Easter Sunday (3/27).  Christian Formation will resume on the Second Sunday of Easter (4/3).

The Rite of Reconciliation is especially appropriate in the Season of Lent.  It is available by contacting Fr. Derek for an appointment by email or phone (757.759.7371).

Sign-up Sheets for Maundy Thursday's Agape Meal, the Garden Watch, and the Easter Vigil Reception are posted on the "Feast" mission bulletin board found in the Parish House first floor hallway.  Please sign up so we can know how many people to anticipate for each of these special nights and also make sure that our Maundy Thursday Garden Watch is covered from 8:30pm to 8:30am outdoors in the Memorial Garden and 8:30am to 10:30am indoors in the Founders' Chapel.

Good Friday is a fast day; those who are physically able are encouraged to abstain from food.  (Remember that children and those with other physical needs can observe a medically-appropriate modified fast.)

Bishop Hollerith to visit St. John's for Easter Vigil.  Make your plans now to be present for the Great Vigil of Easter on Saturday evening, March 26 beginning at sunset (7:22pm).  Our diocesan bishop, Herman "Holly" Hollerith, IV, will be present for his official visitation on this pinnacle celebration of the Christian year.  It will be a glorious night not to be missed!

Easter Vigil and Easter Day Flowers: St. John's is accepting donations for flowers to decorate our worship space for Eastertide.  These flowers may be given in memory of, or in thanksgiving for, a loved one or a special event.  Forms are available in our worship space.  Please either mail your donation and form to the Parish Office or place both in a sealed envelope in the offering plate.  Please be sure to note "Easter flowers" on the check memo line.  Your gift will be reflected on your contribution statement for the year.

Silver Polishing! Altar guild members will meet Saturday, March 19th at 9am for a polishing party to prepare for the upcoming Easter services!  You don't have to be an altar guild member to come join the fun!

Stuff those Easter Eggs!  St. John's will once again host a community Egg Hunt for children in Westminster Park across from the church on Easter Sunday morning at 10:15am.  We have plenty of plastic eggs that can be picked up from the church this Sunday.  Small toys, coins, and individually wrapped candies make excellent stuffers.  Please do not use chocolate candy as the day may be warm and chocolate will melt.  Eggs should be returned to Chisholm Hall by Maundy Thursday.

Can you feed our Pilgrims on April 7?  During each Baptism at St. John's Church, we vow to "do all in our power to support these persons in their life in Christ."  One of the tangible ways you can do this is by preparing and serving a meal for the 20 participants in our Pilgrims in Christ process who are preparing for Baptism or to reaffirm their baptismal vows.  Bob McBride is our Meal Coordinator this year and he reports that we need a meal for April 7.  If you have availability to prepare a simple meal (like soup, salad, and bread) and bring it to Chisholm Hall to serve at 6pm, please call or email Bob (757.618.8885).

Join a Small Group in the new year.
Small groups at St. John's are called "Scott's Creek," in honor of the first such group that met in a home on the banks of Portsmouth's Scott's Creek.  Small groups are a great way to deepen your faith, build friendships, and become more connected to the St. John's community.  Multiple groups with diverse interests and age groupings are available and we invite you to be a part!  Email the Parish Office to get connected!

Want a St. John's name badge?  Are you ready to look outward and be welcoming, greeting those you do not know before you greet your friends and offering hospitality to those you meet?  If your answer is "yes," then complete a name badge request form found in Chisholm Hall.  These badges have a magnetic back (which should be kept away from medical devices and credit/debit cards).
