Today is the Feast of the Transfiguration

The Transfiguration of Jesus (Luke 9:28-36) is not to be understood only as a spiritual experience of Jesus while at prayer that three chosen disciples (Peter, James, and John) were permitted to witness.   It is one of a series of supernatural manifestations, by which God authenticated Jesus as his Son.  It is equal to the appearance of the angels at the birth and at his resurrection, and with the descent of the Spirit at Jesus' baptism.

St. John's observed the eve of this feast at last night's Wednesday Healing Eucharist.

The gospel writers record the voice from heaven saying, "This is my Son, the Beloved, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him."  Briefly the veil is drawn aside, and a chosen few are permitted to see Jesus, not only as the earth-born son of Mary, but as the eternal Son of God.  Moses and Elijah witness to Jesus as the fulfillment of the Law and the Prophets.  In Luke's account of the event, they speak of the exodus which Jesus is to accomplish at Jerusalem.   A cloud, a sign of divine presence, envelops the disciples, and a heavenly voice proclaims Jesus to be the Son of God.

Immediately thereafter, Jesus announces to Peter, James, and John the imminence of his death.  As Paul was later to say of Jesus, "Though he was in the form of God, he did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, and was born in human likeness.  And, being found in human form, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even death on a cross." (Philippians 2:6-8)

The Feast of the Transfiguration is held in the highest esteem by the Eastern Churches of Christianity.  The figure of the transfigured Christ is regarded as a foreshadowing of the Risen and Ascended Lord.  Beginning with its inclusion as a feast for the Episcopal Church in 1892, the observance of this major feast of Jesus has been adopted by most churches of the Anglican Communion.

O God, who on the holy mount revealed to chosen witnesses your well-beloved Son, wonderfully transfigured, in raiment white and glistening: Mercifully grant that we, being delivered from the disquietude of this world, may by faith behold the King in his beauty; who with you, O Father, and you, O Holy Spirit, lives and reigns, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Last week Chisholm Hall rang with the voices of excited children!  Each night approximately 50 children from St. John's, Trinity, and the neighborhood were invited to learn more about our Lord in age-appropriate ways.  They enjoyed dinner, sang, were awed by science experiments, completed art projects, played games, threw water balloons, and heard stories about Jesus' power and love.   This was made possible by the more than twenty-five volunteers who exuberantly showed up each night to ensure that everything ran smoothly.  Thanks to each of you for sharing your time and talent with our youngest brothers and sisters in Christ.  What a blessing you are!

Calling all Men, 8/25

Join Jeffrey Fremeau and other men from St. John's on Tuesday, August 25 from 6:30-8pm for pizza, beer, soda, and an evening of discussion about world view.  As we get older, questions about life can get tougher.  As a man, how do you see yourself in the world?  What is your purpose in this life?  We will also discuss future men's meetings and agendas.

This can be the start of something great with your participation!  Contact Jeffrey Fremeau (757.641.2686) to say you will come or to get more information.

Miscellany

No Sunday Christian Formation for the remainder of August.  There will be no Summer Forum or Atria for the remainder of the month as we finish the renovations on the second floor and get ready for the start of fall.  The Creation Atrium will be open from 10:45-11:30am for the remainder of the summer for children not yet potty trained.

Blessing of the Backpacks will be Sunday, August 30 @ the 9 and 11am worship services.  All students and teachers are invited to begin the school year with some divine inspiration!  Bring your neighbors and teacher co-workers!

Save the date, women of St. John's!  On Sunday, August 30 at 12:15pm the AWE (Anglican Women Empowered) Women's Ministries invite you to attend our annual luncheon meeting.  This is your opportunity to participate in the planning for the AWE Fall Luncheon, the March Retreat, and the St. Fiacre Flower Festival.  Please bring a salad to share and sign up in Chisholm Hall to let the women know that you are planning to attend.  We look forward to seeing you then!  Questions?  Contact Patti Devers.

St. John's needs folks willing to serve the Sacrament in worship and to the homebound.  Contact Fr. Derek to be part of a training starting very soon!

Your gift can help make historyWon't you consider joining with those faithful parishioners, Vestry, and Endowment Committee who have pledged or contributed funds to bring the installation of our new organ to debt-free completion?  Please contact Fr. Derek or Senior Warden Margaret Perkins to make a cash gift or pledge (up to 36 months) to help with the extra costs incurred to install this incredible instrument in our historic worship space.

Your funeral plan is not on file.  Four parishioners of St. John's now have a funeral plan on file in the parish office.  Summer is a great time to spend some time reflecting on the music and scripture readings you would like used at your funeral.  Print this form, fill it out, and bring it to the parish office where we can make a copy for you and keep the original on file.

Wednesday Eucharist will continue through the summer months.  This worship was especially created for those who were traveling over the summertime weekends so that all could still receive Christ's body and blood as strength for the journey.  This 30-minute Eucharist begins at 6:30pm and includes hymns, a brief homily, and healing prayers.

Miss on Sunday?  Come on Wednesday.

Have someone to honor, remember, or celebrate?  Flowers offered to the Glory of God
and for your special intention are needed on almost all Sunday mornings of the summer.  The sign-up sheet hangs on the bulletin board in Chisholm Hall closest to the London St. Parking Lot entrance.  The cost is $75 per Sunday (and can always be shared with someone else) and is due in the Parish Office two weeks before your requested Sunday.

St. John's eNews publishes twice a month in the summer.  The remaining summer issue will publish on 8/20.  Content deadline is the Tuesday before publication.  Weekly issues will resume on September 3.

Want a St. John's name badge?  Are you ready to look outward and be welcoming, greeting those you do not know before you greet your friends and offering hospitality to those you meet?  If your answer is "yes," then complete a name badge request form found in the worship space and Chisholm Hall.  These badges have a magnetic back. (which should be kept away from medical devices and credit/debit cards).
