Sign up today for VBS Kidz Kamp

St. John's is joining with First Presbyterian, Trinity, and St. Christopher's parishes for a city-wide VBS Kidz Kamp to be held at St. John's on  Monday, 7/27 - Thursday, 7/30 from 6- 8:30pm.  Supper will be provided Monday - Wednesday (each parish will host for one night) and a pot luck will be held on Thursday.  Activities for children will revolve around a water theme and adults will have nightly sessions on the creeds of Christianity.

We look forward to an amazing week together!  Would you like to help with the planning of this exciting inter-parish event?  We need lots of volunteers, both teens and adults.  Contact Margaret Perkins to get involved!

Please assist us in our planning efforts--use this online form to register your child(ren) today!

Christmas in July, 7/24 from 6-9pm

Bring your energy, smiles, and spiritual gifts to Christmas in July for  one night of food, air conditioning, and fun for our homeless neighbors in need!   We will serve fried chicken with sides, and watermelon for dessert.

Look for the sign-up sheets and collection box to appear soon in Chisholm Hall with the specifics of what we need as gifts for our homeless guests.   We will need gently used clothes and sneakers, rolling suitcases or bags for both men and women, but mostly men!  Please, please don't buy anything new (like underwear) until you see that it is a size that we will need.

Come bless and be blessed!  We will need those who are willing to serve and clean up.  Want to know more?  Contact Nancy Johnson at 757.646.2647.

General Convention gets underway!

Bishop Hollerith and the deputation from Diocese of Southern Virginia are in Salt Lake City through July 3 to take part in the 78th General Convention of the Episcopal Church. You can find lots of information about General Convention and follow the action in Salt Lake City on our diocese's General Convention blog and our diocesan facebook page.

Tune in here every day through July 3 for live-streaming from Salt Lake City of legislative sessions from the House of Bishops and the House of Deputies (comprised of lay persons, deacons, a nd priests), daily worship, and on-demand features. Plus you'll find links to coverage from Episcopal News Service and a complete calendar of events.

On Saturday of this week our next Presiding Bishop will be selected.  Please keep the General Convention in your prayers that God may richly bless the life and witness of the Episcopal Church for the building up of God's reign in this world.

Miscellany

Christian Formation continues on its summer schedule this week.  Summer Forum will meet in Chisholm Hall for those 13 through adult.  The Good Shepherd & True Vine Atria will be open for those children (potty-trained, ages 3-12 years) who would like to continue their work.  The Creation Atrium will be open from 10-11:30am all summer for children not yet potty trained.

The Parish Office will be closed on Friday, July 3 for the Independence Day holiday.

Would you like to help establish a residential Hospice for the Southside of Hampton Roads?  Do you have a positive experience with Hospice?  Contact Fr. Derek to see how you can get involved!

Your funeral plan is not on file.  Only one parishioner of St. John's has a funeral plan on file in the parish office.  Summer is a great time to spend some time reflecting on the music and scripture readings you would like used at your funeral.  Print this form, fill it out, and bring it to the parish office where we can make a copy for you and keep the original on file.

Wednesday Eucharist will continue through the summer months.  This worship was especially created for those who were traveling over the summertime weekends so that all could still receive Christ's body and blood as strength for the journey.  This 30-minute Eucharist begins at 6:30pm and includes hymns, a brief homily, and healing prayers.

Miss on Sunday?  Come on Wednesday.

Have someone to honor, remember, or celebrate?  Flowers offered to the Glory of God
and for your special intention are needed on almost all Sunday mornings of the summer.  The sign-up sheet hangs on the bulletin board in Chisholm Hall closest to the London St. Parking Lot entrance.  The cost is $75 per Sunday (and can always be shared with someone else) and is due in the Parish Office two weeks before your requested Sunday.

St. John's eNews publishes twice a month in the summer.  Remaining summer issues will publish on 7/9, 7/23, 8/6, & 8/20.  Content deadline is the Tuesday before publication.  Weekly issues will resume on September 3.

Want a St. John's name badge?  Are you ready to look outward and be welcoming, greeting those you do not know before you greet your friends and offering hospitality to those you meet?  If your answer is "yes," then complete a name badge request form found in the worship space and Chisholm Hall.  These badges have a magnetic back. (which should be kept away from medical devices and credit/debit cards).

The Parishioner Corner of our Website has news you can use.  Here you can access the June 2015 Parish Directory, parish handbook, worship ministry schedules, and read approved minutes of vestry discussions and actions as well parish financial reports.  Need or don't remember the password?  Contact the parish office.
