Meet Bob

I am pleased to announce that Father Bob Gilman has agreed to serve as an Assisting Priest
on the staff of St. John's Church.   Bob retired from forty-one years of full-time ordained ministry in 2009, including both parish work and military chaplaincy (including the US Air Force Academy and the NATO peacekeeping mission in Sarajevo among many other challenging and rewarding postings all over the world).  Bob and his wife Connie (who grew up in Portsmouth) have recently moved back to our area and Bob began to look for a good parish "fit" where he might continue to offer some of his ministry gifts.

Fr. Bob has graciously agreed to coordinate St. John's pastoral care & home communion ministry to shut-ins, preside & preach at the Eucharist when I am away, and assist monthly with our worship when I am present.   In his words,

My vision and mission...has been to make the personhood of Jesus and his presence and his call as inviting and dynamic as possible in the lives of all the people I have been chosen to serve.   We are (each) called into the world to bring the Gospel of Christ.  As in the first century, our world is in desperate need of it.

The Vestry, Clifford, and I are so happy to have Bob using his gifts among us in a role that also gives him the freedom and flexibility to enjoy the much deserved benefits of retirement.  Welcome to St. John's!

J. Derek Harbin, rector

In the beauty of St. John's Memorial Garden, where rest the mortal remains of those who have passed from this life to eternity, Owen, Brady, Cora, & Avery died and rose with Christ in the waters of baptism on Pentecost Sunday.

Brady, soaked from the waters of the font and wrapped in his white garment, is told to "Walk always as a child of the light.  When the Lord comes, may you go to meet him with all the saints in his heavenly kingdom."

Miscellany

Christian Formation for all ages resumes this Sunday with Adult Forum and a special intergenerational event in the second floor Atria Gathering Space for children ages 3-15.

"Clean the Basement" Day for St. John's Church will be Saturday, June 13 from 8am-noon.  Contact Jeff Fremeau to volunteer or for more details.

Wednesday Eucharist will continue through the summer months.  This worship was especially created for those who were traveling over the summertime weekends so that all could still receive Christ's body and blood as strength for the journey.  This 30-minute Eucharist begins at 6:30pm and includes hymns, a brief homily, and healing prayers.

Miss on Sunday?  Come on Wednesday.

Have someone to honor, remember, or celebrate?  Flowers offered to the Glory of God
and for your special intention are needed on almost all Sunday mornings of the summer.  The sign-up sheet hangs on the bulletin board in Chisholm Hall closest to the London St. Parking Lot entrance.  The cost is $75 per Sunday (and can always be shared with someone else) and is due in the Parish Office two weeks before your requested Sunday.

With this issue, St. John's eNews transitions to twice a month publication for the summer. Summer issues will publish on 6/11, 6/25, 7/9, 7/23, 8/6, & 8/20.  Content deadline is the Tuesday before publication.  Weekly issues will resume on September 3.

Want a St. John's name badge?  Are you ready to look outward and be welcoming, greeting those you do not know before you greet your friends and offering hospitality to those you meet?  If your answer is "yes," then complete a name badge request form found in the worship space and Chisholm Hall.  These badges have a magnetic back.

The Parishioner Corner of our Website has news you can use.  Here you can access the March 2015 Parish Directory, parish handbook, worship ministry schedules, and read approved minutes of vestry discussions and actions as well parish financial reports.  Need or don't remember the password?  Contact the parish office.
