Lenten Living

Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, February 18 this year.  Christians have observed this season of the church year since the fourth century.  It is the traditional time for adults to be prepared for baptism at the Easter Vigil and for the community to engage in a season of reflection, penitence, and spiritual renewal before Easter.

During Lent, some Christians give up something that hinders their relationship with God.  Others do something extra for their spiritual growth or make a special sacrifice.  The key is to make Lent a memorable season of sincere spiritual growth-a time that can set the tone for continuing spiritual growth.

Scout Sunday Observances begin this week

Boy Scouts, join Fr. Derek in wearing your uniforms to church this Sunday, February 8, for Boy Scout Sunday.  Girl Scouts, remember to wear your uniforms to church on March 8 for Girl Scout Sunday.

Shelter Blessings

Last week's winter shelter was a huge success.  Our guests left Sunday morning with smiles on their faces feeling as blessed as we were after putting in a total of 956 volunteer hours to support 56 guests, over 350 meals, and 274 overnight stays during the seven day period.  God is great and so is each of you!  Special thanks also to Nancy Johnson and Claudia Tomlin who once again coordinated this year's shelter ministry.

Women's Retreat

AWE Women's Ministry is very excited about all those who have registered for the overnight March Retreat.  The deadline for discounted hotel rooms has now passed.

If the over-night stay did not work for you, please consider joining the retreat for Saturday, 3/7.  The morning
begins at 9:30am in the Founders Inn Harrison Room.  Morning and afternoon sessions include singing, teaching from our guest speaker, Christy Foldenauer, and fellowship-discussion groups.  Lunch is served in the Swann Terrace Restaurant.  You may pay at the door.  Fr. Derek and Clifford will conclude our time together with the Eucharist.

Please contact Patti Devers (
757.615.3227) or Della Stearns if you would like to be part of the Saturday event.

Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper is Tuesday, February 17.  Shrove Tuesday, or Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday), is the day before Ash Wednesday when people rid their pantries of all the fattening foods that they would not be consuming during the 40-day Lenten season.  On Tuesday, February 17th, St. John's will host a Pancake Supper from 5:30 - 7pm in Chisholm Hall.  Adults: $5; Ages 3-10: $3; Under 3 free.  Proceeds will go to the acolytes of the Parish.

Ash Wednesday Liturgies will be February 18 at noon and 6:30pm.

For over three decades Claudia Tomlin served as this parish's organist & choir director (February 1971 - February 2005).

In honor of her distinguished service to St. John's Church, she was named organist emerita by Fr. Derek last Sunday and presented with a plaque made from the parish organ's old music stand.

Don't miss out on the Pilgrimage to Scotland and England. If you have any interest in participating in this September 12-25, 2015 pilgrimage, you are urged to make your deposit today.   Hotels are filling fast at some of our destinations.  Once they are full, we can take no more participants!  In Exploring our Anglican Spirituality, pilgrims will walk in the footsteps of many early Celtic and Catholic saints who were central to forming the unique Anglican heritage we cherish in the Episcopal Church today.  Though sponsored by St. John's Church, this pilgrimage is open to anyone who desires to journey with us.  The pilgrimage is limited to a total group size of 30.  Brochures are available in Chisholm Hall or via this link.  Is God calling you to be a part?

The Parishioner Corner of our Website has news you can use.  Here you can access the latest parish directory, parish handbook, access worship ministry schedules, and read approved minutes of vestry discussions and actions as well parish financial reports.  Need or don't remember the password?  Click here
