Baby Jesus lies in the namger at St. John's 2015 Epiphany Pageant

Dear Parents with Young Children in Church

You are doing something really, really important.  I know it's not easy.  I see you with your arms overflowing, and I know you came to church already tired.  Parenting is tiring.  Really tiring.

I watch you bounce and sway trying to keep the baby quiet, juggling the infant car seat and the diaper bag as you find a seat.  I see you wince as your child cries.  I see you anxiously pull things out of your bag of tricks to try to quiet them.

And I see you with your toddler and your preschooler.  I watch you cringe when your little girl asks an innocent question in a voice that might not be an inside voice let alone a church whisper.  I hear the exasperation in your voice as you beg your child to just sit, to be quiet as you feel everyone's eyes on you.  Not everyone is looking, but I know it feels that way.

I know you're wondering is this worth it?  Why do I bother?  I know you often leave church more exhausted than fulfilled.  But what you are doing is so important.

When you are here, the church is filled with a joyful noise.  When you are here, the Body of Christ is more fully present.  When you are here, we are reminded that this worship thing we do isn't about bible study or personal, quiet contemplation but coming together to worship as a community where all are welcome, where we share in the Word and Sacrament together.  When you are here, I have hope that these pews won't be empty in 10 years when your kids are old enough to sit quietly and behave in worship.  I know that they are learning how and why we worship now, before it's too late.  They are learning that worship is important.

I see them learning.  In the midst of the cries, whines, and giggles, in the midst of the crinkling of pretzel bags and the growing pile of crumbs, I see a little girl who insists on going two pews up to share peace with someone she's never met.  I hear a little boy slurping (quite loudly) every last drop of his communion wine out of the cup, determined not to miss a drop of Jesus.  I watch a child excitedly color a cross and point to the one in the front of the sanctuary.  I hear the echoes of "Amen's" just a few seconds after the rest of the community says it together.  I watch a boy just learning to read try to sound out the words in the worship book or count his way to Hymn 672.  Even on weeks when I can't see my own children learning because, well, it's one of those mornings; I can see your children learning.

I know how hard it is to do what you're doing, but I want you to know it matters.  It matters to me.  It matters to my children to not be alone in the pew.  It matters to the congregation to know that families care about faith, to see young people... and even on those weeks when you can't see the little moments, it matters to your children.

It matters that they learn that worship is what we do as a community of faith, that everyone is welcome, that their worship matters.  When we teach children that their worship matters, we teach them that they are enough right here and right now as members of the church community.  They don't need to wait until they can believe, pray or worship a certain way to be welcome here, and I know adults who are still looking to be shown that.  It matters that children learn that they are an integral part of this church, that their prayers, their songs, and even their badly (or perfectly-timed, depending on who you ask) cries and whines are a joyful noise because it means they are present.

I know it's hard, but thank you for what you do when you bring your children to church.  Please know that your family -- with all of its noise, struggle, commotion, and joy -- are not simply tolerated, you are a vital part of the community gathered in worship.

What a gift for Jesus!

Giving to Christ at Christmas is based on a simple idea.  It's Jesus' birthday.  That's why we give gifts to each other.  Let's have our gift giving begin with a gift to him.

Each year we invite followers of Jesus associated with St. John's Church to give the most generous, one-time cash gift we can-above and beyond our normal giving, as we would any Christmas gift-to fund the twin heartbeats of our Lord: evangelistic witness and relief of human suffering, locally, nationally and internationally.

This past Christmastide St. John's parishioners overwhelmingly voted to fund the creation of an online app, Who are you, Jesus?  Envisioned by catechists with decades of experience with children in the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, and using the guidance of Nouma, a beautiful, yet playful and mysterious animated dove, the app will enable the child to engage directly with Jesus' words.  The child can use the functions of the app to listen to or read the scripture and wondering questions, then type on the keyboard, speak into the microphone, or draw a response on the iPad.  The responses will be saved by the app, resulting in a unique book created by the child.

Through your generosity, an amazing $7,270 has been contributed by our parish to this evangelistic effort.  St. John's has become the largest principal sponsor of the app in the nation to date, and will receive a special hotlink to our website from the app, a number of free app downloads, and a personal visit from the app's creators this year!  We will keep you posted when the app launches.  Well done, good and faithful servants!

Christmas Thanks

Thanks to all who made our Christmas and Epiphany celebrations such a stellar success!  From altar guild sacristans to musicians, from Linda Buchanan and her amazing flower guild members to greens hangers and those who stayed after the Epiphany pageant to tear it all down, from pageant actors and all those who worked behind the scenes, it couldn't have happened without your dedication and sacrifice!  I am particularly grateful to each member of our parish staff for the unique sacrifices they each make for our parish and especially during this holy season.

Thank you also for the astoundingly generous Christmas purse you gave me!  It is truly a joy to be with you all during every season of the year, but this type of $joy$ is a special treat and greatly appreciated.  I am humbled to serve among such a gracious and loving community.  Fr. Derek

Angels announce the news of Jesus' birth at the 2015 Epiphany Pageant

From our Bishop

To the Vestry and Members of St. John's, Portsmouth,

Thank you so much for your 2015 pledge to the Diocese of Southern Virginia.  Our shared life in Christ is built upon the generosity and responsibility of congregations like St. John's.

We noticed that your pledge has increased significantly these past two years, and we thank you for your good stewardship.  We encourage you to continue to move to a higher level of giving that is more reflective of your ministry and the importance of your congregation to our common life.

May God bless you in your ministry as you have blessed us with your commitment to the Episcopal Church in Southern Virginia.

Faithfully, Herman Hollerith, IV

2015 Pledge Update: 85 Consecrated Giving pledges have been received totaling $326,511.  We are so thankful that ten of these were brand new pledges, another seven returned to pledging from years past, and thirty-five pledges were increases from 2014.

Prayer List Reset this week.  One of the challenges of maintaining prayer lists is that names can unnecessarily remain on them longer than needed.  Each quarter we "reset" our prayer list by removing all names and requesting parishioners to submit names to repopulate the list.  Please contact this link if you would like a name added to the new list we begin using this week for the 1st quarter of the year.

Take a Pilgrimage to Scotland and England.  Pilgrimage is truly praying with your eyes open.  Spirits are renewed, friendships are formed, and lives can be changed forever.  Just ask those who participated in the transformative Advent 2012 Holy Land pilgrimage sponsored by our parish!  St. John's Church is pleased to announce that our next pilgrimage opportunity will be September 12-25, 2015 as we explore the spread of Christianity from its roots in the Holy Land to England and Scotland.  In Exploring our Anglican Spirituality, pilgrims will walk in the footsteps of many early Celtic and Catholic saints who were central to forming the unique Anglican heritage we cherish in the Episcopal Church today.  Though sponsored by St. John's Church, this pilgrimage is open to anyone who desires to journey with us.  The pilgrimage is limited to a total group size of 30.  Brochures are available in Chisholm Hall or via this link.  Is God calling you to be a part?

Sympathy is offered to Margaret Dickenson, Jim, David, and Richard Todd upon the death of their mother: long-time parishioner, Jennie Todd who died in her 100th year on January 2, 2015. Her graveside service, conducted by Fr. Derek, was last Sunday.  Her family has asked for memorial gifts to be offered to St. John's.  If you would like to send condolences to the family, Margaret and Jim's addresses are in the parish directory found in the Parishioner Corner.

The Parishioner Corner of our Website has news you can use.  Here you can access the latest parish directory, parish handbook, access worship ministry schedules, and read approved minutes of vestry discussions and actions as well parish financial reports.  Need or don't remember the password?  Click here
