Harp & Flute Concert is Saturday

In the midst of the busy holiday season, renew your spirit at a candlelight harp and flute concert on December 13 at 5pm!  Virginia Symphony members Debra Wendells Cross on flute and Barbara Chapman on harp will perform an hour-long free concert of seasonal selections in the historic worship space of St. John's Church as part of Portsmouth's Annual Olde Towne Holiday Music Festival.  A festive cookie reception follows.

Come welcome our guests and help them meet Jesus through you.  We still need more home baked cookies for the reception (they may be brought to the church today, tomorrow or Saturday morning).  This is a great way for our faith community to move into the neighborhood.  Don't forget to invite your friends and neighbors!

Annual Meeting Balloting is Sunday

Ballots will be cast this Sunday at 10am for three new vestry persons and to select the recipient of our Giving to Christ at Christmas gift to Jesus.

The 2014 Credentials Committee has nominated Jeff Fremeau, Jason Lowe, and Nancy Johnson.  Biographical information for these three members of our parish was published in last week's eNews.   Nominations may be received from the floor before the ballots are cast.  Each nominee must be certified in advance as to eligibility, be willing to serve, and have answered the same questions in writing that appeared in last week's eNews.  Parish by-laws direct that three persons are to be selected for a three-year term.

This year's Giving to Christ at Christmas gift will focus once again on evangelism as we celebrate the 60th Anniversary of the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd around the world.   This Sunday we will have the opportunity to choose between two exceptional Catechesis opportunities for our Christmas Gift to Jesus this year:

Option #1: This year, as we also celebrate 30 years of the Catechesis in the United States, the National Association of the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (USA) seeks our support to continue their work to nurture the relationship of joy between God and the child.  Our gift would make a tangible difference in providing the staffing, space, technology, and training to equip those in local congregations to open more atria (like ours) in this country and around the world so more children can discover Jesus, the Good Shepherd, who calls them each by name.

Option #2: A group of Catechists in the United States with decades of experience in atria are creating an app that facilitates the relationship between children and God through age-appropriate scripture that uses Jesus' own words to answer the question of the child's heart, "Who are you, Jesus?"  With the guidance of Nouma, a beautiful, yet playful and mysterious animated dove, the app will enable the child to engage directly with Jesus' words.  The child can use the functions of the app to listen to or read the scripture and wondering questions, then type on the keyboard, speak into the microphone, or draw a response on the iPad.  The responses will be saved by the app, resulting in a unique book created by the child.  For a $500 gift, our parish would be listed as a sponsor on the app itself with a link to our website and would receive 10 free app downloads.  For $5,000 we would be listed as a principal sponsor with 100 free app downloads.

Giving to Christ @ Christmas

Christmas will be here in two weeks.  As we prepare for the upcoming Christmas season, our parish is offering each of us the opportunity to do the single-most important act of the holidays: give a gift to Jesus Christ.  Giving to Christ at Christmas is based on a simple idea.  It's Jesus' birthday.  That's why we give gifts to each other.  Let's have our gift giving begin with a gift to him.

Each year we invite followers of Jesus associated with St. John's Church to give the most generous, one-time cash gift we can-above and beyond our normal giving, as we would any Christmas gift-to fund the twin heartbeats of our Lord: evangelistic witness and relief of human suffering, locally, nationally and internationally.

In 2011 our parish purchased the freedom of 17 girls who had been sold into slavery for $6,153 and established them in new lives through the ministry of She is Safe.  $4,505 was given to assist persecuted Christians around the world in 2012 through Voice of the Martyrs.  Last year $8,303 was given (Giving to Christ at Christmas & matching grant) to Westmoreland Children and Youth Association to assist them in their work with at-risk children in Portsmouth.   That's almost $20,000 in Christmas gifts to Jesus in three years!

This year we focus once again on evangelism as we celebrate the 60th Anniversary of the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd around the world.   This Sunday at 10am we will choose between two exceptional Catechesis opportunities for our Christmas Gift to Jesus this year (see above).

So what's involved?  It's simple.  Help us choose which gift we will fund at 10am on December 14.  Then on December 24, bring your offering marked Giving to Christ at Christmas to services on Christmas Eve and give it as part of our parish Christmas festivities.  If you can't be with us that night, simply place your gift in the offering basket at any Christmas worship event through Epiphany (January 6) or mail it to the Parish Office.  Please note on the memo line: Giving to Christ at Christmas.

Organist/Choirmaster Search update  An excellent candidate, who was involved in another search process concurrent with ours, was interviewed by the rector, associate, senior warden, and two members of the choir.  Our parish and the other parish both offered him the job of organist/choirmaster.  He ultimately chose the other parish's position.  Fr. Derek is committed to finding an outstanding musician for St. John's.  Resumes are once again being solicited.  Please continue to keep this process in your prayers.

Thanks to Ed and Dana Greskowiak for their painting ministry!  Their most recent project involved repairs to the Music/Vesting room.

The Parish Office will be closed for the Christmas Holidays from December 23 at Noon through the end of the year.  Please make sure that your mailed pledge payments are in the office before the 23rd.  If you are making a stock transfer, please contact the Parish Office for specific instructions for donations and advise your financial manager this transaction must be completed by December 23rd.  If you are in arrears on your pledge (and if you are, you will receive a statement this month), please bring it up to date on Sunday, December 21 or during worship on Christmas Eve.

The Epiphany Pageant is coming!  Sign up the next two Sundays in Chisholm Hall or email me to be in the cast.  Please note if you would like a speaking role.  I would especially like 3 adult men willing to have a speaking role as Magi.  Adults and Children are encouraged to participate.  The Pageant will be presented on Tuesday night, January 6 at 6:30pm. - -Clifford King Harbin

Take a Pilgrimage to Scotland and England.  Pilgrimage is truly praying with your eyes open.  Spirits are renewed, friendships are formed, and lives can be changed forever.  Just ask those who participated in the transformative Advent 2012 Holy Land pilgrimage sponsored by our parish!  St. John's Church is pleased to announce that our next pilgrimage opportunity will be September 12-25, 2015 as we explore the spread of Christianity from its roots in the Holy Land to England and Scotland.  In Exploring our Anglican Spirituality, pilgrims will walk in the footsteps of many early Celtic and Catholic saints who were central to forming the unique Anglican heritage we cherish in the Episcopal Church today.  Though sponsored by St. John's Church, this pilgrimage is open to anyone who desires to journey with us.  The pilgrimage is limited to a total group size of 30.  Brochures are available in Chisholm Hall or via this link.  Is God calling you to be a part?
