Giving to Christ @ Christmas

Christmas will be here in three weeks.  As we prepare for the upcoming Christmas season, our parish is offering each of us the opportunity to do the single-most important act of the holidays: give a gift to Jesus Christ.  Giving to Christ at Christmas is based on a simple idea.  It's Jesus' birthday.  That's why we give gifts to each other.  Let's have our gift giving begin with a gift to him.

Each year we invite followers of Jesus associated with St. John's Church to give the most generous, one-time cash gift we can-above and beyond our normal giving, as we would any Christmas gift-to fund the twin heartbeats of our Lord: evangelistic witness and relief of human suffering, locally, nationally and internationally.

In 2011 our parish purchased the freedom of 17 girls who had been sold into slavery for $6,153 and established them in new lives through the ministry of She is Safe.  $4,505 was given to assist persecuted Christians around the world in 2012 through Voice of the Martyrs.  Last year $8,303 was given (Giving to Christ at Christmas & matching grant) to Westmoreland Children and Youth Association to assist them in their work with at-risk children in Portsmouth.   That's almost $20,000 in Christmas gifts to Jesus in three years!

This year we focus once again on evangelism as we celebrate the 60th Anniversary of the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd around the world.   At our Annual meeting on December 14 @ 10am we will choose between two exceptional Catechesis opportunities for our Christmas Gift to Jesus this year:

Option #1: This year, as we also celebrate 30 years of the Catechesis in the United States, the National Association of the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (USA) seeks our support to continue their work to nurture the relationship of joy between God and the child.  Our gift would make a tangible difference in providing the staffing, space, technology, and training to equip those in local congregations to open more atria (like ours) in this country and around the world so more children can discover Jesus, the Good Shepherd, who calls them each by name.

Option #2: A group of Catechists in the United States with decades of experience in atria are creating an app that facilitates the relationship between children and God through age-appropriate scripture that uses Jesus' own words to answer the question of the child's heart, "Who are you, Jesus?"  With the guidance of Nouma, a beautiful, yet playful and mysterious animated dove, the app will enable the child to engage directly with Jesus' words.  The child can use the functions of the app to listen to or read the scripture and wondering questions, then type on the keyboard, speak into the microphone, or draw a response on the iPad.  The responses will be saved by the app, resulting in a unique book created by the child.  For a $500 gift, our parish would be listed as a sponsor on the app itself with a link to our website and would receive 10 free app downloads.  For $5,000 we would be listed as a principal sponsor with 100 free app downloads.

So what's involved?  It's simple.  Help us choose which gift we will fund at 10am on December 14.  Then on December 24, bring your offering marked
Giving to Christ at Christmas
to services on Christmas Eve and give it as part of our parish Christmas festivities.  If you can't be with us that night, simply place your gift in the offering basket at any Christmas worship event through Epiphany (January 6) or mail it to the Parish Office.  Please note on the memo line: Giving to Christ at Christmas.

Flower Guild Info Session is Sunday

Do you enjoy the flower arrangements each week but think "I could never do that?"  Actually there are many tasks in the Flower Guild that don't require arranging skills but still let you learn something along the way.

The Flower Guild is always interested in adding new members.  So there will be an information session after the 11:00 service this Sunday, Dec 7, for anyone (men and women) that would like to know more about the Flower Guild in general as well as the decorating plans for Christmas.

So come join us in the sanctuary at 12:15 this Sunday for a half hour or so.  It will be the most rewarding thing you've done since putting your pledge card on the altar!

Cookies for Harp and Flute Concert

In the midst of the busy holiday season, renew your spirit at a candlelight harp and flute concert on December 13 at 5pm!  Virginia Symphony members Debra Wendells Cross on flute and Barbara Chapman on harp will perform an hour-long free concert of seasonal selections in the historic worship space of St. John's Church as part of Portsmouth's Annual Olde Towne Holiday Music Festival.  A festive cookie reception follows.

That's where we need your help!  Home baked cookies for the Harp and Flute Concert may be brought to the church the week before the concert.  This is a great way for our faith community to move into the neighborhood!

Credentials Committee Announce Vestry Candidates

The 2014 Credentials Committee, mandated by parish by-laws to consist of vestry members whose terms end this year, has completed its work.  This year both members of the Credentials Committee, Jeff Fremeau and Nancy Johnson, are also eligible for re-election since they were filling the unexpired terms of other individuals.  Names and personal statements of the three candidates recommended by the committee appear below.

Nominations may be received from the floor at the Annual Meeting on Sunday, December 14 @ 10am. Each nominee must be certified in advance as to eligibility, be willing to serve, and have answered the same questions in writing that appear in print below.  Parish by-laws direct that three persons are to be selected for a three-year term.

Jeff Fremeau

1) How does your faith in Jesus Christ impact your everyday life?  I find myself asking the question, "What would Jesus want me to do in this situation?"  He gives me direction in every aspect of my life.

2) At which service do you regularly worship and how long have you been a part of St. John's?   I worship at the 9 o'clock service and have been a member of St. John's for over 3 years.

3) In what specific ways have you worked toward the growth and nurture of the Body of Christ in this parish and/or elsewhere?  I have offered my services to the growth of the body of Christ through numerous construction and repair projects at the church.  I participate in all St. John evangelistic and human needs projects and have enjoyed my work on the vestry to manage and direct ministries in our parish..

4) What gifts would you bring to the vestry?  Years of construction experience, management skills, and my ability to get things done with the help of others

5) What are your hopes for the future of St. John's Church?  To grow the membership and ministries of St. John's.

Jason Lowe

1)  How does your faith in Jesus Christ impact your everyday life?  My faith has always been my guide, in just about everything I do and who I am as a person. I have always said that God has a plan for us all and it is our job to follow the signs and see where he leads us.

2)  At which service do you regularly worship and how long have you been a part of St. John's? I have been attending the 9am service for about a year

3)  In what specific ways have you worked toward the growth and nurture of the Body of Christ in this parish and/or elsewhere?  I have been attending church my whole life. I find reflection to be warming, and sermons have a way to tie into what is happening in my daily life which has always strengthens my beliefs. My current path I am on is to achieve financial peace, to handle money God's way.

4)  What gifts would you bring to the leadership team of the vestry?  I am very detailed, analytical, and technical person and would like to bring my talents and gifts to other that could use them.  I have been in the leadership profession for 14 years and would like to help lead in any way I can.

5)  What are your hopes for the future of St. John's Church?  I would like to our parish grow and to continue to help who we can.  One way I have been able to do this is to try to bring a program I have been through that has opened my eyes to the way God teaches us to handle money.

Nancy Johnson

1)  How does your faith in Jesus Christ impact your everyday life? Christ is the light and I'm the candle that can't shine without him! Christ is my joy, hope and sunshine!

2)  At which service do you regularly worship and how long have you been a part of St. John's?   We have been coming to the 9:00 service at St. John's for almost ten years.

3)  In what specific ways have you worked toward the growth and nurture of the Body of Christ in this parish and/or elsewhere?   I have always tried to show the light of Christ in me to everyone I come in contact with and to help them understand that we are all equal in Christ, each with their own special gifts.

4)  What gifts would you bring to the vestry?   I promise to be honest, loyal, and faithful to our church, our priest, our community, and to help grow the outreach of St John's.

5)  What are your hopes for the future of St. John's Church?   I pray that we continue to grow, that we continue to open our hearts and pocket books to those in need, and we plan and provide for the future of St. John's for generations to come!
