Remembering Great Lakes

Each quarter my wife, Clifford, and I receive a statement from the Great Lakes Higher Education Corporation that services the guaranteed student loans for our older son's college education.  Memories flooded back when I received the first one, for it was in May of 1998 that I wrote the 120th and final check to Great Lakes, paying off a Guaranteed Student Loan debt I incurred in order to prepare for the priesthood.  I wrote those monthly checks for nine years, and each of them was a tangible reminder of God's provision and care.

I left for seminary with my first semester paid, $500 in my savings account, and a commitment from my family and parish to assist with my education, on occasion, when they could.  A Masters of Divinity degree was going to cost approximately $17,000 a year for three years.  The Admission Officer assured me that I should not be concerned about the cost.  "With God you will see wondrous things happen," he quipped.  In the final semester of my degree, I signed the loan papers with Great Lakes.  I had borrowed only $10,000; God miraculously provided the $41,000+ balance through the generosity of my sisters and brothers in Christ, many of whom I will never know.

That is not to say that there were not many nights when I anguished over how I would pay my debts.  It soon became clear, however, that God wanted me to understand that they weren't mine.  If my life was no longer mine, but Christ's, then the bills weren't mine either.  They were his.  I was not the only student to receive a check in the mail, a check for the exact amount of an overdue tuition bill, with a note that read, "I was led in my prayer time to send you this check."  Though I was only able to offer a mustard seed of faith, God worked mighty financial miracles.

Everything my family and I have belongs to God.  Though there have been many things we would have liked to possess over the years, we have never lacked for those things we have truly needed.  In 2008, when our family was swept up in the Great Recession and had to live below the national poverty level for almost two years, God remained faithful.  We continued to give money for ministry and just enough money was always present to provide for our needs.

Bishop David Stanway once said, "When we're looking at our need, we have to go back to the fact that the silver and gold belongs to God.  There's no shortage of money with God.  There never will be.  If we keep looking at our need all the time, giving of our financial resources to God will soon seem impossible.  That's too vast a sum to give.  But if we look back on our past experience, if we look at God's resources, it's a different story."

Sometimes I forget to remember God's faithfulness as I struggle with some present issue over God's timing.  (Why does our Lord have to be so slow?)  Then the postal carrier shoves a new Great Lakes statement through the mail slot, a paper reminder of God's generosity, perfect timing, and the joy that comes from giving generously and abundantly.

Calling all women!  You are cordially invited to the All Saints' Day Women's Retreat on November 1st sponsored by AWE Women's Ministries of St. John's Church.  Invite your friends and neighbors to join you for this special day.  The retreat runs from 9am to 3pm, includes a delicious lunch, and costs only $20/person.

The retreat leader for this special day is Kimberly Logsdon.  Kimberly is the Executive Director of Care Net Resource Pregnancy Centers and is responsible for two centers in Newport News and Williamsburg.  She became the Executive Director a little over a year ago, after God called her out of the corporate world. Since coming to real belief in Jesus in her early 30's, Kimberly has served in women's discipleship ministries and as a volunteer chaplain in emergency room, hospice, and jail environments. She is frequently asked to speak to groups and loves to point people to pursuit of increased intimacy of with Jesus.  Kimberly and her husband, Barry, are members of Kempsville Presbyterian Church in Virginia Beach and are long-time friends of St. John's.

Wednesday, October 29, is the deadline for registering.  Register here today!

Turkey Trot is coming!

Get ready to trot to your friends and neighbors to collect food items for Thanksgiving Baskets for those in need in the Portsmouth area.  Due to the timing of food distribution, collection cards will be distributed on Sunday, November 9.  Take these to your classmates, co-workers, neighbors, family and friends to collect items (or cash for Turkey & pies).  Pick these items back up from them and bring the food items to Chisholm Hall sometime between November 10 and 18. (Please do NOT bring earlier as there are significant events being held in Chisholm Hall and the space is needed for these groups).  Place the items under your household zip code.  Bragging rights from 2013 belong to "Greater Hampton Roads"....let's see who will win this year!!

Miscellany

Christian Formation for all ages continues on Sunday.

Carry a banner for the Departed on 11/2.  During worship on All Saints' Sunday (November 2), we will remember those who have died and gone to God's heavenly feast since last year's All Saints' celebration.  Thanks to the talents of Mary Colby, worshippers at St. John's historically join the procession while carrying banners bearing the names of departed loved ones, reminding us that they are indeed "Christ's Own Forever."  If you have had a relative die since last November, please contact the Parish Office by Sunday, October 26 so that you can learn how to prepare your loved one's banner for this special day.

Bring Pictures of your saints past on 11/2.  Scripture tells us that we are surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses who have gone before us.  Bring the photographs of the past saints who have made a difference in your life (framed or unframed) and help us surround our worship space the earthly images of those who are now in the presence of Jesus.

Sunday, 11/9 is our congregation's Consecration Sunday.  Please plan now to attend two important events on that day: morning worship at 8, 9 or 11 and a brunch following each worship celebration (a catered meal, not a potluck.)

Pilgrims in Christ, Journey #5 has begun, but it is not too late for you to be a part!  Interested in strengthening your spiritual journey?  Want to learn more about God and the History of Salvation?  Always wondered what "xyz" means?  Need to update your credentials to serve at St. John's (Diocesan Council, Vestry, Lay Eucharistic Minister, Lay Eucharistic Visitor, etc.)?  Enjoy meeting new people?  Want to learn more about how we worship in the Episcopal Church?  Just want a great free meal and fellowship on Thursday evenings?  Then Pilgrims in Christ is the process for you to experience.  Click here for easy, online registration!

Race for Breath in memory of parishioner Suzanne Noles.  Suzanne's family and friends were blessed last year by St Johns' contributions and participation in the annual Race for Breath, a charity fundraiser for lung cancer research.  Suzanne's team raised $3400.  Due to popular demand, this race will be held again on Nov 1st @ 9:00 am at 24th Street Boardwalk, Virginia Beach, VA.  Suzanne's family would be honored by your continued support and God's blessing again this year.  Click on this link to race or donate to Suzanne's Sea Stars team.

Take a Pilgrimage to Scotland and England.  Pilgrimage is truly praying with your eyes open.  Spirits are renewed, friendships are formed, and lives can be changed forever.  Just ask those who participated in the transformative Advent 2012 Holy Land pilgrimage sponsored by our parish!  St. John's Church is pleased to announce that our next pilgrimage opportunity will be September 12-25, 2015 as we explore the spread of Christianity from its roots in the Holy Land to England and Scotland.  In Exploring our Anglican Spirituality, pilgrims will walk in the footsteps of many early Celtic and Catholic saints who were central to forming the unique Anglican heritage we cherish in the Episcopal Church today.  Though sponsored by St. John's Church, this pilgrimage is open to anyone who desires to journey with us.  The pilgrimage is limited to a total group size of 30.  Brochures are available in Chisholm Hall or via this link.  Is God calling you to be a part?

Join a small group.  Small groups at St. John's are called "Scott's Creek," in honor of the first such group that met in a home on the banks of Portsmouth's Scott's Creek.  Small groups are a great way to deepen your faith, build friendships, and become more connected to the St. John's community.  What began as one group has now multiplied to three!  Scott's Creek Small Groups continue to multiply and we invite you to become a part.  You are invited to become a part of Scott's Creek Group 3.  The group meets Sundays at 5:30pm (October 26; November 9 & 23).  Email Dick Devers or call him (757.630.6884) to get connected!

Content deadline for St. John's eNews is Tuesday before publication.
