Founders' Chapel is on the move

ET Gresham Company has completed repairs on the exterior of the North Transept (Memorial Garden) wall and the removal of scaffolding is underway.  Damaged brick was removed and replaced, extensive holes and cracks were pointed with matching mortar, an invisible waterproofing membrane was applied to the entire brick face, old protective panels were removed from the stained glass, damaged wood holding the stained glass was repaired and returned to its original 1898 color, stained glass was professionally cleaned, and new protective panels were installed to protect the stained glass while allowing the architectural interest of the window trim to be more visible from the exterior.

Scaffolding has now been moved to the interior of the North Transept (Founders' Chapel) wall so that workers can repair and paint the plaster and wood trim damaged by years of water intrusion.  During this period of construction, the North Washington Street entrance of the church will remain closed so that the Founders' Chapel may be located in that North Entrance Tower.

Funding for this $25,800 project was authorized by the vestry from surplus funds generously given by parishioners to the 2013 budget!

Don't miss this special "moving into the neighborhood" event!

Tyrone and Pat Hines, founders of Westmoreland Children and Youth Association, will be our guest speakers in Chisholm Hall on Sunday, 6/29 @ 10am.  Westmoreland works with the most at-risk children in Portsmouth to keep them out of gangs.  Their goal is to promote an understanding of basic values, team work, community service, and character development through mentoring and involvement in a wide variety of sports and cheering.  They have no paid staff and work closely with Zion Baptist Church who provides adult mentors and coaches.   Mr. Hines recently received one of the 2014 Safe Harbor Awards for his outstanding contribution to the children of our community.

Founded in 2008, Westmoreland was the 2013 recipient of St. John's Giving to Christ @ Christmas funds ($5,503) as well as an additional $2,800 matching grant from the St. John's London House Endowment.  In the words of Ida Kay Jordan in her May 25, 2014 Virginian-Pilot column, "Recently (Tyrone) got the news St. John's Episcopal Church was giving him a large donation he didn't expect.  I wish members of that congregation could have heard the excitement in his voice.  He told me it was the largest amount he had ever received from a church."

Come and hear how your birthday gifts to Jesus have made a difference in the lives of children in this community!

Consider using Bill Pay instead of the Offering Plate

Every summer, income to St. John's drops as folks are away from the parish enjoying the wonderful opportunities this season provides.  Using the BILL PAY features provided by your bank via online banking is a simple and convenient way to make sure your weekly contributions to St John's are made, especially during the summer months when many folks are traveling on summer vacation. Setting up a payment though your online banking is easy and allows you the flexibility of changing it whenever you want through your computer or tablet device.  And online banking is typically free!

If you have not used online banking before, your bank most likely has an online demo for you to use or they will assist you at the branch.  All you need to set it up is St John's address and phone number.  Since most banks are similar, below are a few tips from our Parish Treasurer.  (A handout with computer screen shots will be included in Sunday's worship bulletin.)

Step 1: Start by logging into your bank and going into the section of your bill pay to add a company or a payee.

Step 2: Create a new bill address, using 424 Washington St; Portsmouth, VA 23705
757-399-4967. It may ask for an account number, but I just put our name in this space.

Step 3: Initiating an automatic payment usually falls under the "manage bill" section or add a bill.

Step 4: Finally, you decide the dollar amount, frequency and duration of your payment.  You can change this any time.

Wednesday Eucharist will continue through the summer months.  This worship was especially created for those who were traveling over the summertime weekends so that all could still receive Christ's body and blood as strength for the journey.  This 30 minute Eucharist begins at 6:30pm and includes hymns, a brief homily, and healing prayers.  Miss on Sunday?  Come on Wednesday.

St. John's eNews transitions to twice a month publication for the summer on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of each month.  Content deadline is the Tuesday before publication.  Weekly issues will resume on September 4.
