Don't miss this special

"moving into the neighborhood" event!

Tyrone and Pat Hines, founders of Westmoreland Children and Youth Association, will be our guest speakers in Chisholm Hall on Sunday, 6/29 @ 10am.  Westmoreland works with the most at-risk children in Portsmouth to keep them out of gangs.  Their goal is to promote an understanding of basic values, team work, community service, and character development through mentoring and involvement in a wide variety of sports and cheering.  They have no paid staff and work closely with Zion Baptist Church who provides adult mentors and coaches.   Mr. Hines recently received one of the 2014 Safe Harbor Awards for his outstanding contribution to the children of our community.

Founded in 2008, Westmoreland was the 2013 recipient of St. John's Giving to Christ @ Christmas funds ($5,503) as well as an additional $2,800 matching grant from the St. John's London House Endowment.  In the words of Ida Kay Jordan in her May 25, 2014 Virginian-Pilot column, "Recently (Tyrone) got the news St. John's Episcopal Church was giving him a large donation he didn't expect.  I wish members of that congregation could have heard the excitement in his voice.  He told me it was the largest amount he had ever received from a church."

Come and hear how your birthday gifts to Jesus have made a difference in the lives of children in this community!

The rooms are empty; the Renovation begins!

Can you scrape and patch walls that need some TLC?  Do you have skills installing lighting?  Can you paint?

We will transform the Godly Play room into the Atrium of the True Vine (for ages 6-9 under Miss Beth's continuing leadership) and the large room at the northern end of the hall will be readied as an atrium for older-aged children.  We will be using the same paint color, lighting, and flooring that have made the Creation and Good Shepherd Atria so stunning.

Contact Martha Rush who is organizing the work crews and dates for work.  Thanks in advance for your dedication to the faith journey of our younger sisters and brothers in Christ!

Miscellany

Last call for KIDZ KAMP Leadership.  Can you help organize and lead St. John's KIDZ KAMP this year?  We are looking for a team of three people who will coordinate this annual summer event for the youth of our Parish on a date mutually convenient for you and the Parish calendar.  Contact the Parish Office if you can offer yourself for this ministry!

Wednesday Eucharist will continue through the summer months.  This worship was especially created for those who were traveling over the summertime weekends so that all could still receive Christ's body and blood as strength for the journey.  This 30 minute Eucharist begins at 6:30pm and includes hymns, a brief homily, and healing prayers.  Miss on Sunday?  Come on Wednesday.

Have someone to honor, remember, or celebrate?  Flowers offered to the Glory of God and for your special intention are needed on almost all Sunday mornings of the summer.  The sign-up sheet hangs on the bulletin board in Chisholm Hall closest to the London St. Parking Lot entrance.  The cost is $75 per Sunday (and can always be shared with someone else) and due in the Parish Office two weeks before your requested Sunday.

With this issue, St. John's eNews transitions to twice a month publication for the summer.  Beginning today, our eNews will publish on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of each month.  Content deadline is the Tuesday before publication.  Weekly issues will resume on September 4.
