Ascension Day Eucharist

Death by Chocolate Reception

Tonight @ 6:30pm

Forty years the children of Israel wandered in the wilderness before they were led by Joshua across the Jordan into the Promised Land.  Forty days after Easter the new, wandering Israel is led by the greater Joshua (Yeshua) across the glassy, crystalline sea to the right hand of God on high.  Jesus Christ is the beginning of the New Creation; he is the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep (1 Corinthians 15) and the pioneer of our salvation (Hebrews 2:10ff).  Today, as C.S. Lewis reminds us, "a new chapter in cosmic history has opened."  Christ closed the door to everlasting death by his own death and opened heaven for all as easily as he opened his own tomb.  The dragon is slain, the Lamb has conquered and now the King ascends to his throne.  All of this...follows along in joyful refrain as we celebrate the Ascension...

Jesus' resurrection leads to his Ascension.  You don't get one without the other.  The "It is Finished" of Good Friday must be extended throughout the whole world...

Think of Christ's Ascension like the coronation scene towards the end of Tolkien's Return of the King: the Ring has been destroyed, Mordor is defeated, Aragorn ascends the throne having conquered the enemies of middle-earth, all things are under his feet and elves, men and even hobbits gather for feast and festival.  Ascension is a triumphal entry, not into Jerusalem to die, but into the Heavenly Jerusalem as King: palms are waved in exaltation, the vault of heaven resounds, "Worthy is the Lamb who was slain to receive honor and glory and blessing."

The rooms are empty; the Renovation begins!

Thanks to all those last Sunday who used their strong backs to empty two rooms on the second floor that will be renovated this summer!

We will transform the Godly Play room into the Atrium of the True Vine (for ages 6-9 under Miss Beth's continuing leadership) and the large room at the northern end of the hall will be readied as an atrium for older-aged children.  We will be using the same paint color, lighting, and flooring that have made the Creation and Good Shepherd Atria so stunning.

Can you scrape and patch walls that need some TLC?  Do you have skills installing lighting?  Contact the Parish Office so that we can begin to organize the work crews and dates for work.

Thanks in advance for your dedication to the faith journey of our younger sisters and brothers in Christ!

Katherine Grace Ryder was born and received her first blessing from Fr. Derek on Memorial Day.  Parents Joe and Stephanie, Katherine, and big sister Claire happily returned home yesterday.

Miscellany

Saturday's Pig Pickin' is sold out.  The ticket purchase deadline has passed.  No tickets are available for purchase from the parish office or on the day of the event.  We are excited to report that 52% of the 197 tickets sold are from outside the St. John's worshipping community.  The Word became flesh and moved into the neighborhood...

KIDZ KAMP Leadership Sought.  Can you help organize and lead St. John's KIDZ KAMP this year?  We are looking for a team of three people who will coordinate this annual summer event for the youth of our Parish on a date mutually convenient for you and the Parish calendar.  Contact the Parish Office if you can offer yourself for this ministry!

Wednesday Eucharist will continue through the summer months.  This worship was especially created for those who were traveling over the summertime weekends so that all could still receive Christ's body and blood as strength for the journey.  This 30 minute Eucharist begins at 6:30pm and includes hymns, a brief homily, and healing prayers.  Miss on Sunday?  Come on Wednesday.

Have someone to honor, remember, or celebrate?  Flowers offered to the Glory of God and for your special intention are needed on almost all Sunday mornings of the summer.  The sign-up sheet hangs on the bulletin board in Chisholm Hall closest to the London St. Parking Lot entrance.  The cost is $75 per Sunday (and can always be shared with someone else) and due in the Parish Office two weeks before your requested Sunday.

Summer Time is Prayer Time.   Join your St. John's friends and neighbors at 10am for coffee and prayer for this opportunity that occurs on the first Thursday of each month through August.  The group will next meet on June 5.  Bring your Adorations, Confessions, Thanksgivings, and Supplications.  We will be praying for St. John's Church, for Portsmouth and our businesses, our neighbors, friends and families.  Pray with a group or in the Founders' Chapel alone, as you prefer.  Open to all.

Linda Mathews is compiling a volunteer office assistant list.  If you are willing to take on a ministry of assisting in the church office on any given day (Mon - Fri from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM) or on an as-needed basis, please contact Linda Mathews (757-399-2080, 757-672-4135).

St. John's eNews transitions to twice a month publication for the summer.  Beginning next Thursday, June 5, our eNews will publish on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of each month.  Content deadline is the Tuesday before publication.  Weekly issues will resume on September 4.
