The Rhondels to provide live music

for St. John's Pig Pickin'

Join us on Saturday, May 31st to kick off the start of summer with a southern pig pickin'. The festivities begin at 5pm and goes until sunset in the St. John's parking lot.  Andy Perkins will once again lead the team preparing the pig.  Come out and partake in pulled pork sandwiches with all the fixin's (hotdogs for those who don't eat barbeque).   Beer and lemonade will also be served.

The Rhondels are a musical institution hailing from Virginia Beach.  Performing under this name since 1983 (formerly Bill Deal & the Rhondels from the late 70s), they are a favorite of live music fans everywhere!

Bring a lawn chair in which to sit and your dancing shoes.  Buy tickets online using Square Marketplace.  Adult tickets are $10; children (3-12) tickets are $5; and children under 3 tickets are free.  The online registration and payment deadline for participants at St. John's is Wednesday, May 28.

A computer will be available this Sunday after each worship service to make the registration process as simple as possible for you.

The event is designed to be a community neighborhood event, open to all "in our neighborhood."  Have you invited your neighbor to attend with you?

Prep for 2nd Floor Renovation begins this Sunday, 5/25

All hands on deck!  We are looking for strong backs this Sunday at 10am to empty two rooms on the second floor that will be renovated this summer.  We will transform the Godly Play room into the Atrium of the True Vine (for ages 6-9 under Miss Beth's continuing leadership) and the large room at the northern end of the hall will be readied as an atrium for older-aged children.  We will be using the same paint color, lighting, and flooring that have made the Creation and Good Shepherd Atria so stunning.

After clearing the rooms on Sunday, the transformation this summer can only happen with your help!  Are you willing to paint?  Do you have skills installing lighting?  Can you patch walls that need some TLC?  Contact the Parish Office so that we can begin to organize the work crews and dates for work.

Thanks in advance for your dedication to the faith journey of our younger sisters and brothers in Christ!

Ascension Day Worship & Death by Chocolate Reception, 5/29

Ascension Day Worship will be Thursday evening, May 29 at 6:30pm followed by a "Death by Chocolate" reception.  Please sign up in Chisholm Hall this Sunday to let us know which yummy chocolate treat you will bring to share!

Miscellany

The Parish Office will be closed on Monday for Memorial Day.

KIDZ KAMP Leadership Sought.  Can you help organize and lead St. John's KIDZ KAMP this year?  We are looking for a team of three people who will coordinate this annual summer event for the youth of our Parish on a date mutually convenient for you and the Parish calendar.  Contact the Parish Office if you can offer yourself for this ministry!

Shag Lessons continue this week.  What fun we had last Sunday at St. John's shag lessons!  Want to get in on the fun this Sunday?  Contact the Parish Office by Friday afternoon to let us know you are coming, and grab some lunch on Sunday before returning to Chisholm Hall from 1-3pm.  If you already know how to shag, come join the fun and be our mentors!

Summer Time is Prayer Time.   Join your St. John's friends and neighbors at 10am for coffee and prayer for this opportunity that occurs on the first Thursday of each month through August.  The group will next meet on June 5.  Bring your Adorations, Confessions, Thanksgivings, and Supplications.  We will be praying for St. John's Church, for Portsmouth and our businesses, our neighbors, friends and families.  Pray with a group or in the Founders' Chapel alone, as you prefer.  Open to all.

Linda Mathews is compiling a volunteer office assistant list.  If you are willing to take on a ministry of assisting in the church office on any given day (Mon - Fri from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM) or on an as-needed basis, please contact Linda Mathews (757-399-2080, 757-672-4135).

St. John's eNews transitions to twice a month publication for the summer.  Beginning June 5, our eNews will publish on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of each month.  Content deadline is the Tuesday before publication.  Weekly issues will resume on September 4.
