Pig Pickin' kicks off St. John's summer

boston butt pulled pork bbq

Join us on Saturday, May 31st to kick off the start of summer with a southern pig pickin'. The festivities begin at 5pm and goes until sunset in the St. John's parking lot.  Andy Perkins will once again lead the team preparing the pig.  Come out and partake in pulled pork sandwiches with all the fixin's (hotdogs for those who don't eat barbeque).  Beer and lemonade will also be served.

Bring a lawn chair in which to sit.  Buy tickets online using Square Marketplace.  Adult tickets are $10; children (3-12) tickets are $5; and children under 3 tickets are free.  The online registration and payment deadline for participants at St. John's is Wednesday, May 28.

A computer will be available for the next two Sundays after each worship service to make the registration process as simple as possible for you.

The event is designed to be a community neighborhood event, open to all "in our neighborhood."  Be thinking about who you can invite to help us start off the summer!

Shag, anyone?

The entertainment for this year's Pig Pickin' will be beach music to shag (dance) by.  St. John's is offering free dance classes instructed by a professional on Sunday, May 18 & 25, from 1-3pm.  A free lunch will be offered to participants just after church for your convenience.

Deadline for registration is noon this Saturday.  Please call (757.399.4967) or email the Parish Office to reserve your spot.  If you already know how to shag, come join the fun and be our models!

Ascension Day Worship & Death by Chocolate Reception, 5/29

Jesus, when he was in time, had a history.  On the fortieth day of his resurrected life he left time, entering again into a glorious eternity so that he is always present to us.

Jesus has all eternity to listen to our prayers in time.  By removing his physical presence at the Ascension he made himself available to the whole world instantaneously.  This is the glory of the Ascension.

Ascension Day Worship will be Thursday evening, May 29 at 6:30pm followed by a "Death by Chocolate" reception.

Please sign up in Chisholm Hall on either Sunday, May 18 or May 25 to let us know which yummy chocolate treat you will bring to share.

Miscellany

Christian Formation for youth completes the 2013-2014 season on Sunday.  The Godly Play room will undergo renovation to become the Atrium of the True Vine (for ages 6-9) this summer.  Be watching for how you can help get it ready for September's opening.

Contemplative Prayer meets each Monday.  We gather weekly in the Founders' Chapel from 6:30-7:30pm to worship God, using words, music, and our bodies.  Contemplative Prayer is a way of praying through listening, learning to go beyond words so that we can simply be present with God.  After an introduction to quiet prayer, we will sit in silence with each other and with God and then share a brief reflection on our prayer experience before finishing.

Praying for Portsmouth.  Interested in joining a group that regularly prays for the prospering of Portsmouth?  Contact Suzanne Erickson.

Summer Time is Prayer Time.   Join your St. John's friends and neighbors at 10am for coffee and prayer on the first Thursday of each month, May through August.  Bring your Adorations, Confessions, Thanksgivings, and Supplications.  We will be praying for St. John's Church, for Portsmouth and our businesses, our neighbors, friends and families. Pray with a group or in the Founders' Chapel alone, as you prefer.  Open to all.
